I thought about a list based on experience. But keep what Curl said in mind, these rankings are more about how they mapped onto my life at the time, rather than any deep analysis of the quality or importance to gaming overall. Generally speaking: A+ = consoles that was a significant part of my life, had some of my favourite games of all time, and/or enough that I still pick up the console and play today, or have a lot of ports that I play. A = similar to A+, just on a smaller scale. B. Maybe consoles where I pick up a few games still and play once every 3 years or so. C. Consoles that I played a decent amount of but didn’t really play after their generation despite still having some decently good memories; also, I don’t really play games from that console today. D are consoles which I wasn’t a fan of but still had one or two games on it I liked. E. Consoles that I played a notable amount of but had no special attachment.
My ranks for experience are something like this…
A+ Tier: SNES, PSX, Wii, DS, Switch/Switch 2
A Tier: NES, Mega Drive
B Tier: Gameboy, Dreamcast, PS2, 3DS
C: N64, Saturn, PSP, Vita
D: Vic 20, Commodore 64, Gamecube, Wii U
E: 2600, Master-system
To expand a little on my intro post… since I like reminiscing (don’t read if you don’t care about someone else’s brief rough free-write notes on memory lane).
A+ All these consoles I owned 40+ games on. SNES and PSX have lots of my alltime favourite games that I play on modern hardware up to this day. I still use Wii Fit and play Wii games (Wii Mode on my Wii U because I made the mistake of transferring data… I like the Wii better aesthetically). DS I played on other hardware almost since the console was done. Switch/Switch 2 has been my main platform since 2017.
A. I play Super Mario Bros 3 and Sonic games probably once every year to this day. And will frequently be into the library for one-offs. Some other games, particularly the beat-em-ups like Double Dragon, Street Gangs (River City Ransom), and Streets of Rage… and their derivatives… in fact, playing a derivative right now, Jay and Silent Bob Mall Brawl - don’t buy it, unless you’re like me and the idea of playing Street Gangs with a Jay and Silent Bob skin with some Double Dragon stuff appeals to you… most consider this a lazy game, but it’s one that gives me joy.
B. These are consoles that have some games I play to this day maybe on a less frequent schedule (think once every 3-5 years) but around the same volume as A Tier: Skies of Arcadia, Soul Caliber, Grandia 2, Sonic Adventure, Final Fantasy Saga/Legend, Mystic Quest/Seiken Densetsu 1/Adventure of Mana, Metroid 2, Xenosaga, FFX, GTA trilogy, Generally few games I dive into play from the library at random. 3DS I put here because, while there isn’t a lot I play now from that generation, it was my main system for at least a while prior to the Switch, and I did play it a ton… I also bought every version, and still use the hardware to play old Sega games in (to me still very impressive to this day) popping parallax 3D.
C. I used Vita primarily as a portable PlayStation. But mostly these systems I didn’t play after their generation. Maybe I’ll pick up a game from time to time… N64 almost like a C+ because of its Ogre Battle game which I probably give a whirl since picking up the port on Wii… and I will likely play Conker, Banjo, and Blast Corps again if they pop up on the EShop.
D. These consoles were more a one or two trick pony for me. Probably one game I really liked, and that’s all: Animal Crossing, Xenoblade Chronicles X (and the Earthbound port), and Vic 20/Commodore 64 are systems I have almost a mythological fascination with. I was young, and every time I played them (or the Apple 2) I felt like I was doing something special. Granted, I was very young… but I do vaguely remember several games quite well that I played after the age of 5 or so.
E. Same as my intro.
