Some people genuinely like FF7 over FF6. But I think a lot of people either haven't played it or played one of the many inferior ports. The GBA version is the best version IMO, but having a GBA without a faded screen or hooking up a Gamecube with a Gameboy Player and Swiss installed to fix all the native GBPlayer issues is asking a lot of people. Then you have the pixel remaster which is pretty bad with a lot of bewildering changes. Anyway FF6 just languishes unnoticed by a lot of people.

As for Skyrim, I feel it was inferior when it came to story, worldbuilding, and scope to Morrowwind. But then Morrowwind has it's own issues of being completely outdated in so many ways. Skyrim's combat, graphics, and fast travel were amazing for a 2011 open world game. But these days we have so many better open world games that vastly improve on what Skyrim had to offer. (But I suppose not everybody builds their lists based on what the best game is today, but rather how good a game felt to them in the past. Both are a valid way to build a list IMO.)

The GBA version of FF6 is actually the only one I've played. It's a solid game but I would put it fourth when ranking the mainline games.

As for Skrim, I do actually rank my games based on how much I like them today, but Skyrim I haven't played for many years which is the main reason it's so low (used to be in my top 20). I think the thing about Skyrim is that it's true its combat isn't exceptional and it's open-world has arguably been surpassed a little (though I still consider it among the best), but it still feels like the definitive fantasy sandbox game in so many ways. Witcher 3, BotW and Elden Ring are better in a ton of areas for example, but they don't offer quite the same thing so if you want to go experience a fantasty world with total freedom and build your own character it's still the best at that imo (except maybe WoW, but that's a different thing as well and subscriptions are expensive lol).

How would you rank the FF games in order? I've played 6,7, 4, and 10. IMO 6 is the best one I played, with 7 not too far behind. Four was great fun on the DS. 10 is where I feel the series strayed too far from its roots. I own FF12, III DS, 8, and 9. Just haven't had the time to play them.

My personal ranking would be this:

  • FF7
  • FF9
  • FF10
  • FF6
  • FF12
  • Tactics
  • FF8
  • FF4

And I own XVI which I plan to play before too long. IX is a great bet if you liked the originals.

Thanks for all the shoutouts! I really just helped adding data in. Thank you for all of your hard work as well! The thread turned out great. Let me know if you need help this year as well if you plan on keeping the tradition alive!

That's certainly the plan for now and the help would be much appreciated when the time comes

I’m really curious how the user base of this website became so skewed towards Japanese Developed games. Sometimes it feels like I’m on Gematsu or something…

That is not a this site thing. If you are into games and game history, you cannot deny the influence of Japan.

Just look at how the country has a whole RPG subgenre named after it: JRPG. And despite what many these days think, the JRPG-distinction never was about turn-based. Most western RPGs back then were turn-based, the notable ones like Rogue, Wizardry, Ultima or even the original Fallout were all turn-based. No, JRPG defined itself by being very innovative in the story telling focus. Just as a simple test: can you name characters from the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series? Can you do so with Ultima or Wizardry (which have comparatively many  entries)?

Another genre is Metroidvania, look how many exist today. The genre is defined by Metroid and Castlevania, by Nintendo and Capcom respectively. SoulsLike based on From Software games are a more recent example of the japanese influence.

If you are a gamer and ignore the japanese development, then you ignore a massive chunk of gaming.

Quite a bit late as I've been busy since finishing the results, but I wanted to keep up my tradition of doing a bit of a stat comparison between my own list and the combined results as I have done in previous years, only comparing to my full top 100 this year (the lowest 50 of which were unoffcial). Here it is:

- The combined top 100 contains:

  • 94 games I've played
  • 41 games in my own Top 100
  • 27 games in my own Top 50
  • 8 games in my own Top 10 (Same as last year - solid!)

- 4 games from the combined top 10 are in my top 50 - OoT, BotW, Galaxy and Odyssey. None are at #51-#100 (though RE4 is kind of omitted by accident because I included the remake instead and forgot about it).

- Just like last year no games from the combined top 10 were in my top 10. Breath of the Wild was the closest at #17 on my list.

- The games I have closest to the combined top 100 are Baldur’s Gate 3 with 4 spots difference (#62 on my list, #66 combined) and FF7 with 5 spots difference (#18 on my list, #13 combined)

- Of the top 100 games I’ve played 94 of them, down from 95 last year (really out here un-playing games these days)

- 9 games were "unique" to my top 50 this time. Down three from last year.

  • Black Mesa (#9)
  • Doki Doki Literature Club! (#12)
  • Deltarune (#23)
  • Diablo III (#27)
  • OMORI (#28)
  • Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (#31)
  • The Talos Principle (#37)
  • The Talos Principle II (#38)
  • Tales of Xillia 2 (#45)

- And this is definitely cheating, but 18 games were unique to my #51 to #100:

  • Tales of the Abyss (#56)
  • Tales of Graces f (#59)
  • Disco Elysium (#63)
  • Steins;Gate Elite (#64)
  • Super Meat Boy (#69)
  • The Witcher (#70)
  • Golden Sun: The Lost Age (#71)
  • Astro’s Playroom (#79)
  • Stray (#88)
  • The Beginner’s Guide (#91)
  • OneShot (#93)
  • Pikmin (#94)
  • Luigi’s Mansion (#95)
  • Taz: Wanted (#96)
  • APB: Reloaded (#97)
  • Hearthstone (#98)
  • Heroes of Might and Magic V (#99)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (#100)

(Only one game in the bottom 10 was listed lol)

And finally cause I rarely get to list this many here are the most represented series in my own top 100:

  • Tales of - 7
  • Zelda - 7
  • Final Fantasy - 5 (three of which are FF7 and its remakes)
  • Metal Gear Rising/Solid - 4
  • Pokémon - 4
  • The Witcher - 3
  • Silent Hill - 3
  • Super Mario - 3
  • Warcraft (if you count spin-offs) - 3
