I’m really curious how the user base of this website became so skewed towards Japanese Developed games. Sometimes it feels like I’m on Gematsu or something…

That is not a this site thing. If you are into games and game history, you cannot deny the influence of Japan.

Just look at how the country has a whole RPG subgenre named after it: JRPG. And despite what many these days think, the JRPG-distinction never was about turn-based. Most western RPGs back then were turn-based, the notable ones like Rogue, Wizardry, Ultima or even the original Fallout were all turn-based. No, JRPG defined itself by being very innovative in the story telling focus. Just as a simple test: can you name characters from the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series? Can you do so with Ultima or Wizardry (which have comparatively many  entries)?

Another genre is Metroidvania, look how many exist today. The genre is defined by Metroid and Castlevania, by Nintendo and Capcom respectively. SoulsLike based on From Software games are a more recent example of the japanese influence.

If you are a gamer and ignore the japanese development, then you ignore a massive chunk of gaming.
