Forums - Sports - Weight loss journey: 13kg/28 pounds down since start of the year

Not sure if this qualifies as "sports" (fitness maybe) but since I have a really bad family history of heart attack/stroke (my Dad and his Dad both died at around 50 from it) I've been working hard to get in better shape this year, and today I got back my blood cholesterol test with "excellent" results, and I'm down 13kg/28 pounds since January and 27kg/60 pounds since 2014 when I was overweight.

Been jogging every day when I can, walking whenever possible, cutting out sugar and eating smaller portions.

Anyone else working on fitness these days?

Yeah, i do a lot of fitness stuff, moved into closer of a 50/50 ratio for weights and cardio.  Also doing more yin activities like using my inversion table and moves that incorporate stretching.

My brother has a heart condition...... got a bit concerned over this and got him a Heartmath sensor for xmas.... hopefully is appreciating it

I felt like I was going anorexic, my body was ridiculously skinny in the mirror. Then I got on the scale and I was still 80kg, much to my surprise. I don't fully understand it. But then I was eating a lot for my birthday and thanksgiving and such and I gained another 5kg in a week. Now at 85kg in an almost instant, while I don't feel fat, I definitely feel the extra weight on my body.

It doesn't feel great, so I will probably cut soon. I have high blood pressure too, but I am hoping they were all false readings and I was just dehydrated each time.

TLDR: Need to eat better, exercise more.

Keep it up man. I was unhealthy and very skinny but turned my life around and gained over 20 kg of mostly muscle. Now I weight 80-81 kg at 186 cm height. My final target is 90-95 kg, a long way to go, but I'm pleased with my progress.

I used to consume soft drinks and sugary junk like a maniac (3 cans + 400ml orange juice + 3 large spoons of sugar + 5 large pieces of bread across 3 varied meals every day). I couldn't really gain weight due to my natural high metabolism, but eliminating sugar and dairy products (minus healthy cheese, butter, and occasionally yogurt), and lowering my carbs intake improved my health a lot. I'm also 100% committed to intermittent fasting which is probably a contributing factor.

I tried ketogenic diet for a few months, but it didn't suit me (or my wallet lol). It hindered my muscle growth rate, and messed up my digestion (mixed greens and some nuts were particularly bad).

Stay healthy, kick out the negative thoughts, and have fun finding what works for you!

Cheers, and congrats on your progress too, that's awesome.

Sugar was a big problem for me too, used to drink a lot of juice and coke, (replaced that with black coffee and green tea) eat sugary cereal, (replaced it with oats) and have takeaways a lot when I felt too lazy to cook.

It's especially tricky cos I am on anxiety medication that promotes weight gain, so I gotta work really hard to not put on fat. My Dad was overweight and he passed when I was  a teenager, at just 14 years older than I am now, so I gotta look out.

Great job, OP!

I recently made some changes to my diet due to a terrible bout of kidneystones. Had to have laser treatment to blast it, it took 6-7 weeks, all in all and has been miserable. I've been living really poorly, diet-wise, for most of my life, and 2025 was probably peak unhealthy. Among cutting down on salt in general, my type of stone buildup requires less meat protein, meaning red meat, fish, poultry, the works. I already cut back on meat some time ago due to insane prices, and for variety's sake. Luckily, I'm a really good cook and can make great meals on my own. As for weight loss; nothing to report yet, I've barely been able to move since the beginning of October, but now that I'm able to again, it's coming!

Exercising causes heavier breathing a.k.a. more Co2 emissions. So I try to exercise as little as possible to save the Planet.

On a more serious note, making your own meals instead of take-a-way or prefab meals is a must. It's way healthier AND you'd be doing extra activities at the same time.

I lift a little to stay tone and jog five days a week. Drink only water and eat mostly vegan four days a week (only my own food prepared at home; no restaurants or take-out). On the weekends, I let myself eat whatever I want and don't exercise. That method has kept me trim and in shape for years now, and the blood work (cholesterol etc.) has been great.

Thanks!

In addition to eating more lean meats like chicken and less red meat, I've found that cutting down on sugar helps the most, along with switching to black coffee, eating less bread, brown rice as a healthier carb with dinner and such, green tea to raise metabolism, etc.

Let us know how you progress, all the best on your quest. :)
