Forums - Nintendo - [Opinion]I think people are overreacting over the whole Metroid Prime 4 NPC situation

Its possible people arent overreacting at all tho

Around the Network

It's really just because people have been waiting for this game for so long, and then it took so long in development, the anticipation is incredibly high and so people are freaking out at the slightest new thing i.e. the motorcycle and a talkative NPC. And they are feeding off the fact that we don't know much at all about those things, trying to claim the entire game is just gonna be those two things haha.

Anyone who was very excited about the game and now refuses to play it because of a motorcycle or an NPC is a clown, let's be honest. It's fine to not like those two things, but the game isn't called Metroid Prime: Motorcycle, or Metroid Prime: Talkative NPC, so people should stop freaking out so much.

Anyway it's all driven by content creators taking advantage of this to get views, and then people freak out because they see so many content creators talking about it so it feels like a big deal if you spend all your time in the social media world. It's just marketing so these people can get views, and be sensationalist and making people emotional is the best way to get extra views, especially if you are making them freak out about something. If you're an adult human being and can control your feelings, you're not freaking out about an NPC or a motorcycle haha, though you may say to yourself "I'm not sure those things will be a great part of the game".

It's not like Nintendo pokemon'd Prime 4 and put in zero effort to turn the franchise into shovelware haha, from what we've seen it looks like MP4 is going full on after being another epic Prime game.

One thing I DO wanna see in Metroid these days, assuming the twisted bastard lives somehow, is more indication of Ridley's monstrous personality, because so far we've only had tie in manga and Smash Bros. to properly convey Ridley as a monster inside and out. One manga (and I think Other M) even has Ridley confirmed as the pirate who killed Samus' parents.

These are valid points on the franchise's story, but it hinges on Miles what's-his-face being a pest hanging around for a tutorial's length while we already know there are five of these dudes, and God only knows how long they'll actually be there annoying and hindering you.

I don't think anyone is afraid or complaining about some dude talking, most people liked Fusion and Corruption, and they had that, but looking at Other M shows that there are absolutely very poor, immersion-breaking ways this stuff can be implemented, and given how few and far between Metroid games are, I think the PTSD is valid.

The main problem with OM isn't the NPCs, but Samus herself, what a mockery of her character, specially for a game that was supposed to happen after Super.

But anyway, if you watched the trailer and saw 5 Miles, you and I must have watched different trailers.

There has been silly/cheap dialogue in the series before (Metroid Prime 3 comes to mind). Didn't stop it from being a great Metroid game.

And even if this was a first for the series, so has been many other far more transgressive changes in pretty much every Metroid game over the last 23 years. Didn't stop them from being great games. Again, would be nice if you took a look at the OP ^^

Of course I read the OP, sure I agree there have been many well executed changes before (Other M is my favorite Metroid game),
but nothing else felt as out of place as this stupid 'funny' character.

Hold on, "Other M is my favorite Metroid game" followed by "nothing in the series felt as out of place as Miles" is the wildest thing I've read in a looong time.

I do think people shouldn't give up on the game yet and wait and see how the overall implementation of the NPC companion aspect is like but it's completely understandable for fans who prefer games like Prime 1 and consider isolation a really important part of the series and dislike how it's shifted away from that to be very concerned by the direction Prime 4 is going in.

Prime 3 did have NPCs but if I remember right after the first 1-2 hours you were alone most of the time until the climax and there weren't any that were particularly annoying so those people were able to put up with it but here NPC companions look like they're going to be a thing that continually happens throughout the game and the first one people have seen is terrible so even if he's the worst it could still seriously drag the game down if some of the others are bad too. Even Miles alone is gonna be immersion breaking for many Metroid fans and his character really does feel out of place, like if there's any video game series I don't wanna see a character like that appear in it Metroid is definitely up there.

If he's only in it for a small portion near the start that wouldn't be too bad though still not ideal since the opening hours of a game are the most important but it's actually up in the air how much of a presence he'll have overall cause this Japanese commercial shows him appearing alongside a few other NPCs at a later point so he is actually not confined to the beginning. Hopefully his role after the start is tiny.

I will say to you the same I said to Pemalite. You would have a point if Metroid Prime 1 was the last game of the series before Prime 4. But we had two sequels to the Prime saga and while both kept the isolation in good messure (and everything seems to point to Prime 4 doing the same), they also combined it with a progressively more direct narrative and more involved and numerous characters. A similar thing happened to the 2D games. This has been going on for quite a while. It's not a surprise. If a nerdy NPC is all it takes for some people to throw the game into the garbage can maybe they weren't that interested in the first place or they haven't been in touch with the series for more than 20 years.

As for breaking the immersion, I would say that the Aurora Units and Admiral Dane in Prime 3 already broke the "immersion" by telling you constantly what to do, what your situation is and even giving you hints and/or marking on your map where to go if you took to long to advance the story. Again, while the format is more "personal", this is not a new thing. It's an evolution of an already stablished tendency in the series. You can dislike it and that's totally fine. But people can't act surprised by this. And again, even if some people find Miles annoying, I don't think his presence (which again, will be limited) should be a factor that ruins Metroid Prime 4 as a game. Plenty of amazing games have silly acting characters, even serious games.

I don't think having a moment in which all the bounty hunters (Miles included) work together with Samus in a big battle is something to be worried about. If anything, it seems like it will be one big epic moment.

I thought about it after my last post, and remembered that Prime 2 has U-Mos as an NPC that stops and gives Samus context, guidance and direction at points throughout that game. It wasn't as nearly as involved and overt as it was in other games like Fusion, Other M and Prime 3, but Retro was already laying that foundation in Prime 2. Despite that, it's every bit as "Metroidy" as Prime 1 and Super. You're still spending 99 percent of the game isolated in hostile alien environments.

People forget that one of the biggest complaints about Prime 1 was the sheer amount of scanning and reading of logs that the game contains, especially in the opening hours. Prime 2 isn't significantly better. I've seen people talk about the overuse of audio logs in modern games since the PS360 era; imagine that, but instead of being able to multitask while listening to an audio log, you have to constantly pause gameplay to read the same thing. Immersion is a word that I've used in my earlier post because it's a word that Metroid fans like to use; did it not ruin your "immersion" when you're in a room/environment with hostile life forms that politely waited for you to finish reading data on scanned objects before you went back to shooting them?

Without having read or seen developer interviews, I'm willing to bet Retro realized that and started looking into ways to expand the lore and worldbuilding of the Prime series without being so dependent on reading lore dumps and diary entries.

It's possible that those things affect the game in a significant and negative way? Sure. Everything is possible.

Do we have enough evidence that points to something like that? Not even close. In fact, the same previews that have overblown the NPC situation have made abundantly clear that literally everything else is great and feels exactly like a Metroid Prime game.

So yes, I would say this is an overreaction. Even if the game ends up being bad, based on what we know right now, acting like the game will be bad because of an NPC and a bike is not very rational. Specially this level of commotion.

It's very curious, because Ridley is fully capable of talking and acting rationally. But every single game insists in making it a brainless monster. He could have given a lot more narratively wise if Sakamoto wanted to. Anyways...

I'd like for Ridley to get benched for once. It's gotten beyond ridiculous how they keep finding ways to fit it in each game, just to get its ass whipped again. At this point, Ridley's a joke. Don't get me wrong, battling him is exhilarating, but the suspension of disbelief on how he keeps getting revived/rebuilt/reborn/recloned in time to get clapped in Samus' next adventure is broken.

Here's an idea: give us another character from Ripley's species, and have it be more than just the bad guy who does one bad thing at the beginning of the game  before Samus smokes that ass near the end of the second act.

I'm one such clown, and I'm okay with it. What I wanted, Nintendo isn't providing, so I'm passing on it. It isn't the first time, and it certainly won't be the last but again, that's okay. I physically have almost every Metroid game ever released and the hardware to go with it. I'm good.
