I don't think anyone is afraid or complaining about some dude talking, most people liked Fusion and Corruption, and they had that, but looking at Other M shows that there are absolutely very poor, immersion-breaking ways this stuff can be implemented, and given how few and far between Metroid games are, I think the PTSD is valid.

The main problem with OM isn't the NPCs, but Samus herself, what a mockery of her character, specially for a game that was supposed to happen after Super.

But anyway, if you watched the trailer and saw 5 Miles, you and I must have watched different trailers.
