| Sephiran said: Pricing is not a major factor here, the games that are popular in Europe are not games that will even get ported to Switch 2, and unlike in Japan and the US, they can't really compensate not getting those third party games to their system due to Nintendo IP being fairly minor in Europe outside a few outliers like France. The Switch 2 price is fairly reasonable for what it offers. And if the only way for Nintendo to sell in Europe is to lose money on hardware sales, that isn't something they will do. One important factor here is that PS can easily recoup losing money on hardware sales due to the gigantic revenue they get from people playing online on PS. Nintendo gets almost nothing in comparison when it comes to subcription revenue due to its online subscription being cheap and few users play online on Switch 2. |
Nintendo games are extremely popular in Europe. Europe is not like Southeast Asia or Latin America where Nintendo IPs have generations of gamers who never played them. Nintendo always sells well in Europe when the price is reasonable. Nintendo DS sold over 50 million units in Europe, Switch will cross 40 million units and surpass Game Boy too. Wii also smashed selling 33 million, more than the PS3
The point is Europe is not a single market with all wealthy population. Sure we have Germany, United Kingdom and France who can afford many consoles and games, but there are less wealthy markets in Europe who are only now catching up to PS5 because they were confortable playing on their PS4 and couldn't justify a PS5 purchase yet
I think we are all making hasty allegations regarding to Switch 2 future in Europe, because it could be just a matter of more games getting released to attract more casual buyers. Switch 1 did ~196k in Europe on its first October, Switch 2 is actually selling significantly better in Europe compared to Switch 1, so Switch 2 selling 40mi+ in Europe is not out of the cards, but overall console sales have been declining in Europe with even the PS5 selling less than the PS4. If Nintendo wants to avoid losing market share, they will need to offer more competitive prices for Europe somewhere in the future like Sony is doing with PS5 right now
