Somehow missed this thread this morning.
Honestly, given how long PS4 and Xbox One have been supported, I expect current consoles will probably still be getting significant software into the mid 2030s.
Generational leaps are shrinking, and budgets are ballooning, leading to devs releasing their games on as many platforms as possible. This year's Call of Duty, Black Ops 7, is coming out on PS4 and Xbox One still, 13 years after those systems releasing. For perspective, that's like if 2019's Modern Warfare reboot came out on PS3.
I am ready to move on, or atlest get a PC store on consoles, I am tired of so many PC excluvies not releasting on Consoles or coming so much later...

So far a great generation for efficiency and abundance of games. Not so great for defining experiences but I see that changing a lot in the next few years.
I really do feel like the generation could comfortably go another 5 years without a new system, especially at 30fps which I'm always comfortable to play at in 3rd person games. I think the main draw for PS6 at first will just be 60fps with raytraycing and good image quality (above PS5 quality mode)
I like my PS5. Will probably use it for another 10 years.
Have no reason to look for an upgrade any time soon and felt like it was a good move skipping the PS4-generation completely.
If there even is such a thing as a PS7 that will be the next console I buy.
Damn, I bought my PS5 in October 2022 (just to play Demon's Souls Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Final Fantasy XVI). I played a fair amount of games on my PS5, but I played WAY more on my PS4 and PS3. In my entire life my main platform has always been the PC, but I'm disappointed with this generation. I only have 6 physical games (Elden Ring, Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Ghostwire Tokyo, Cyberpunk 2077, and Star Wars Outlaws), compared to the more than 50 physical games on the PS4 and more than 50 on PS3... well, in the end this generation is awful.
Five years already jeez. The number of flat games I've bought / played this gen does not reflect that.
Series X I've only used for a couple of last gen games and is now used by my kid to play Roblox. The last flat game I played on PS5 was PoE2.
It's also coming up on the 3 year anniversary of PSVR2. (Next February) For that I have already bought over 80 games, playing every night when time permits. If it weren't for VR this gen would have been pretty poor.
Currently playing VRacer on PSVR2. Couple laps from last night:
Edit: Damn YouTube quality sucks nowadays, been a while since I uploaded a fast video. Compression mess.
Last edited by SvennoJ - on 11 November 2025The cross-gen period will be longer next gen. It helps that the consoles have SSDs.
PS4 and Xbox One are still getting some titles 5 years in after replacement.
There have been plenty of ninth-generation titles, just not as much non-crossgen games and less quality than a lot of previous gens.

Congrats!
Was lucky to get a PS5 at release, then switched to PS5 Pro ...
... and I STILL don't have the feeling that the current-gen has fully started/embraced its power just yet.
In retrospect, I applaud both even more that they've went with an SSD. Imagining that their specs must have been final around late 2019, it's an astonishing decision. PS5's custom solution even being a bit more impressive to me.
Well, I still have Death Stranding 2 and Yōtei left to play this year. And, inbetween, am still playing and enjoying No Man's Sky.
