Forums - Nintendo - Your Metroid History

My mom rented me the first Metroid and from the moment that iconic theme hit, I was hooked. Been a fan ever since. I think 2D works best for the franchise, but Prime 1-3 were awesome, particularly the first. Didn't like Dread's physics, look or vibe so I skipped it, and the whole Samus-riding-a-hog thing is absolutely disgusting, so I'll be skipping that, as well. But I still own Metroid 1-Super/Fusion and Prime games and will always go back to them. When done right, there is no Nintendo IP I'd rather play than Metroid.

I'm so happy to read so many different stories about people's beginnings with Metroid. You can tell it truly is a special series beloved by many.

Super Metroid is the only game I've played but didnt finish it.

Hoping to get into the series in the future properly.

Started out with the NES Metroid. It very quickly ranked right up there with Legend of Zelda. Outside of the original Gameboy I never bought myself another Nintendo handheld until the New 3DS XL (which I haven't really played) so I missed out on all the handheld titles past the Gameboy ones.

I really liked Prime and its successors. Dread was awesome, Other M was just ok. This game is why I made the jump to Switch 2, just like with Breath of the Wild and Switch 1 I want the best possible experience with this title and it was worth a system purchase to get that.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing all these Metroid histories. For a series that has a hard time eclipsing the 3 million unit barrier we’re lucky to all have had such varied experiences with the franchise.

I’m still always going to wonder what the Bandai version of Prime 4 was going to look like but I’m definitely happy that Nintendo handed the reins over to Retro once more. It’s going to be a great opportunity for them to reestablish themselves as a premier Nintendo developer. It’s hard to believe that an entire console generation passed with so many of us waiting for this game. That certainly will be the historical legacy of this title and probably a big reason why we won’t end up getting reveals of games “In Development” from Nintendo any time soon. Great job, Samus! You’re helping make the gaming galaxy better all the time.

My first exposure to Metroid was through Super Smash Bros. on the N64 where I originally thought Samus might have been a character from F-Zero. A few years later, I played the Metroid Fusion and Prime demos at store kiosks, but they didn't really vibe with me (I was 11 at the time). When the original DS came out, it launched with Metroid Prime Hunters First Hunt, which I really enjoyed and blew me away playing a game that looked and controlled like that on a handheld device.

Then, when Prime 3 was announced for the Wii, I thought the controls (and the game itself) looked incredibly intriguing, so I went back and played Metroid Prime (and unlocked Metroid NES on it) and loved them both. While waiting for Prime 3, I played Prime 2, Hunters, and Super, and soon discovered the series was one of my favorites in gaming.

I have played all of the games since (outside of Pinball and Federation Force) and, while skeptical of what we have seen so far of 4, can't wait to play it.

NES Metroid. Still my favourite game in the series. I'd call myself a fan of the 2D series, and not particularly interested in the 3D/FPS series.

Another point. I tend to like the high stakes in the original Metroid; it flips the classic RPG formula on its head where instead of punishing yourself with grinding to advance your character, the game punishes you with grinding for playing sloppy and getting hurt... the fear of having to grind a lot puts the fear of death on me as a player like no other mechanic... perhaps a little too punishing for most players today. But severe consequences were a big part of earlier games in general... at least up to Sonic 2, then it kinda went away.

If I hadn't played Zero Mission before NES Metroid, I doubt I would have been able to beat it and enjoy it. Thanks to ZM, I managed to emulate that game's route from memory on NES Metroid. Sometimes I still got bamboozled with copy-paste rooms or enemies that killed me on a door transition, but that basic knowledge of the map was enough to not being completely and utterly lost. Without Zero Mission, I would have probably hanged myself with the controller's cord xD

We’re just 5 days away from the next page in your Metroid history. Have you preordered the game? Are you getting it physically or digitally? Are you waiting for reviews or are you buying now and asking questions later?
