NES Metroid. Still my favourite game in the series. I'd call myself a fan of the 2D series, and not particularly interested in the 3D/FPS series.

Another point. I tend to like the high stakes in the original Metroid; it flips the classic RPG formula on its head where instead of punishing yourself with grinding to advance your character, the game punishes you with grinding for playing sloppy and getting hurt... the fear of having to grind a lot puts the fear of death on me as a player like no other mechanic... perhaps a little too punishing for most players today. But severe consequences were a big part of earlier games in general... at least up to Sonic 2, then it kinda went away.

If I hadn't played Zero Mission before NES Metroid, I doubt I would have been able to beat it and enjoy it. Thanks to ZM, I managed to emulate that game's route from memory on NES Metroid. Sometimes I still got bamboozled with copy-paste rooms or enemies that killed me on a door transition, but that basic knowledge of the map was enough to not being completely and utterly lost. Without Zero Mission, I would have probably hanged myself with the controller's cord xD
