I wonder how many PS5 systems officially sold in Japan that were then exported to other markets, given that the main reason why Sony increased the price of the PS5 in Japan was to combat those exports.

Does the PS5 in reality "only" have a 4-5M user base in Japan? Because i don't think a shift to digital sales alone can explain the huge difference between PS5 software sales in Japan compared to PS4, it would be logical if the user base is considerably smaller in reality as well.

I mean on current trends Switch 2's top five best selling games will already pretty much surpass PS5 top five best selling games on the Famitsu charts during this holiday period. That should be impossible if the PS5 really would have a 7M+ active user base in Japan.

PS5 is probably sub 5M, and Series XS is probably sub 300k in Japan

The PS5 userbase isn't as big as it appears on paper but you're also just talking about attach rate here. Even at Sonys peak (PS2) you were rarely getting games with an attach rate more than 10%. Nintendo meanwhile would have many games in 20-50% range per generation and in the case of MKW 90% lol

The best selling PS2 title in Japan was 3.5m, Mario Kart World will pass it next year despite having a much smaller userbase.

Good week for the Switch 2 and just a little bit to go till it has a very week several week stretch. It already having weeks with nearly half of the top 10 software being its games is a strong sign. The PS5 dropping back under 8k this late in the year on the other hand is a bad sign so that decent stretch it was on starting week 36 seems to be over now. Also the Switch 1 version of DQ 1-2 being over 50% of sales shows just how relevant that platform will continue being for software sales for a while.

Switch 1 up week on week yet again, damn thing just refuses to die.

PS5 desperately needs a price drop, but sadly it seems those are a thing of the past.

Squenix Modern JRPG FW Comparison

  • Dragon Quest XI (3DS+PS4) - 2,080,806
  • Dragon Quest VII (3DS) - 836,654

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4) - 702,853

  • Final Fantasy XVI (PS5) - 336,027

  • Star Ocean: The Second Story R (Combined) - 50,577
  • Tales of Graces f Remastered (NS+PS5) - 41,370

I included a variety of projects because there are relatively few good comparisons to a compilation of HD NES JRPG remakes. In general, although DQ I&II didn't do great by Dragon Quest standards, it did well by standards of JRPG remakes/reimaginings.

This will be the first digimon game to hit 100k (physical) in recent memory. Probably is at 150k+ including digital and PC

SW2 has impressive hardware sales.
NSW has impressive software sales.
PS5 has 8 titles in the top 30. Impressive!

Eh what? No chance Digimon hits 100k physical in Japan, its under 40k sales now and will probably be gone from the top 30 next week. PS5 games don't have those kind of evergreen legs at retail, even something like Yotei is declining pretty fast at retail in Japan and is already selling below DK Bananza.

This thread says it's on 87k. 100k retail lifetime makes sense even if it leaves top 30 next week. It must be ~95k by the end of year, we will know if it reaches the Famistu year end chart

150k digital + PC also makes sense for me
