Forums - Gaming - Black sheep of the series that are great actually (and why)

Zelda2 The Adventure of Link. Played it back in the day on the NES. Can be frustrating, most games were at the time, but so much to love about it.

1. First game I really thought I was having a real duel with the Darknuts and co. Controls felt great.
2. I like the combo of exploration in the overworld, then going side scrolling for action.
3. Palace music theme is still fantastic.

Yep, this is the main one that comes to mind for me.

But there's another one I'd mention:

I think a lot of people hate FF8... there was a poll on this website once that deliberately just left FF8 off when asking us what our favourite FF games were... that's how vindictive toward it some people are toward it.

For me, it's top tier. I loved the world, loved the atmosphere and music, and I loved the sandbox-crafting system. I also enjoyed the quasi-class system with the GFs, where GFs were equipped to characters to transform them into a quasi-class... and you could equip as many of these as you wanted, but it wasn't a good idea, as there were redundancies. It is also the FF game that has the most places in it I'd like to visit on vacation. I once made a thread in this forum about that. I also loved how the game used music in its theming. Usually they identify it with one version of each song, this game incorporated traces of other songs throughout.

Although, despite all the hate it gets, it does get its fair share of love. One of its songs made the Olympics:

Plus, I love the music at the end to this day, particularly the last 7 minutes:

MKWorld has become a bit of a black sheep for the MarioKart franchise. It’s definitely not my favorite entry, though I’d definitely argue it sits firmly in 3rd place, behind only MKWii and MK8DX.

Resident Evil 6. Everybody seems to hate that game and as a Resident Evil game goes it's not great. It's just not really survival horror at all. However, the moment to moment gameplay is great, it's a fantastic co-op game, and some of the story bits are hilariously bad. My favorite is Jake and Sherry's ending. They defeat a fiery Ustanak that has been following them the whole game. Jake turns to Sherry and says "you saved me, thank you". Sherry grabs Jakes hand right as this song begins to play

It is such a B-movie type corny scene that it made the moment unforgettable to me. That and the whole game just being a blast to play with a friend. People love to hate on it, and I'm glad Resident Evil went on to go back to the drawing board for the mainline entries, but I would absolutely eat up a game like RE:6 again, and I'd love it if Capcom made another over the top action coop cheesy "horror" game in the same vein

Batman Arkham Origins, the black sheep to the point where its left out of the "Arkham Trilogy" But its my favorite of the series, loved the assassins mechanic and above all else loved its depiction of Bane
And that scene with Batman Joker and Bane in the hotel was just gold

Battlefield Hardline and Ace Combat 6 were two more I really enjoyed, the latter for its flexible gameplay and the latter for its epic large scale battles and soundtrack.

I also loved Bayonetta 3; yeah the graphics were kinda ugly and the story was dumb, but the gameplay was so outrageously entertaining that I had a blast regardless.

Bayo 3 is great. The story is stupid in every Bayo/DMC/NG game. People whined about the story just to whine. Never has a game in that genre had a well written story. They are about characters and styling combos.

I think I will join team Doom 3 defenders, love that game. Fantastic atmosphere and gameplay. I enjoy the slower pace, it does pick up at the end becoming like a traditional Doom, but the whole experience is cool.

Then I want to highlight Resident Evil 3 Remake. I understand it cut a lot from the original, it is quite short, and maybe a little disappointing after RE2 remake. That being said I have had so much fun playing RE3 remake. I think it nails the mechanics 100 %, that dodge mechanic makes the gameplay so engaging. The level design is quite good and it has a fun atmosphere. I would even pick the game over Village, which I found kind of disappointing.

I don't have a problem with games having a silly or unserious story, but Bayo 3 fell down more in the villain not being very well built up or interesting, and the whole

Spoiler!
Viola takes over as Bayonetta thing at the end which really soured me as while she was an okay character she was no way a worthy replacement for Cereza.

As I say, still had a good time thanks to the terrific gameplay though.

She'll come back. Video games like this are like comic books. They can always and will always find some silly reason for them to come back. Even more serious games like Metroid find a fingernail to bring Ridley back.

Metroid:Other M

This game got shunned en masse for its portrayal of Samus' "daddy" issues and her overall mental weakness.  While I admit that I am not a big fan of Other M's cringy story and cut scenes, the game itself was fantastic, imo.  I enjoyed the level design and puzzles and blasting through the morph ball tunnels was a lot of fun.

I don’t think you’re at odds with the consensus on this. The gameplay is arguably a ton of fun and the use of third person in a 3D Metroid game is very nice and I hope it happens again. Unfortunately Sakamoto had a very specific tone intended for Samus and her relationship with Adam (and…the baby…it hurts just to say that phrase) that were in direct contradiction to the character we had been in all the games preceding that one.

I remember enjoying the game, but locking the power bombs after the end of the game, the weak and artificial way they lock Samus abilities that make her seem more mindless soldier than heroic bounty hunter, and the terrible, terrible, terrible (I could go on) voice acting of a terrible script were too much for me to want to play it again, which is absolutely the opposite feeling I have when playing any other Metroid game.
