Sales trouble? Highly unlikely. Metroid has been a profitable IP, but no individual release has cracked 5 million. That will even be a feat for a crossgen game like MP4 to achieve.
The quality of the game? We'll see. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been cooking for a long time, nearly 7 years since the development restarted. While that means a game can be made better, sometimes a protracted development cycle isn't good.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

M4B will be my first Metroid

Metroid doesn't market well. The combat doesn't look sexy, it doesn't have set pieces, it doesn't have big budgets to show off, or especially inventive gameplay to dedicate a direct to...

It's just an atmospheric puzzle/FPS and I think although this game will push the boat out a bit more, it's just not a game they are investing heavily in the marketing of.

I don't think so. It'll probably be the best selling metroid game.

I would be very surprised if it outsells Metroid Dread with the luke-warm reception the trailers have had.

I am entering this though with some level of skepticism, but also optimism for a decent game.

- And on top of all of this? Metroid Prime 4 is being shoved after the peak holiday purchasing season, overshadowed by other new and shiny games like Kirby Air Riders and Pokémon Legends Z-A.

I wouldn't exactly say it is overshadowed by those two games lol. Air Riders is probably going to be a very niche game, doesn't exactly look like a big title, and Legends Z-A looks like literally the most uninspired, uninteresting, bland Pokemon game ever. If anything, MP4 is THE first party game to get on Switch and S2 post-DKB.

As far as if it'll be super good or not, we'll only know once it's out. I didn't find what has been shown so far to be mind blowing or anything, but I guess I wouldn't really expect it anyway. Just looks like more Prime, developed for the Switch and ported over to Switch2 for upgraded framerate/resolution. If it's close to as good as the original Prime, it'll be great. Of course, as usual, that doesn't mean it'll be a big seller, because it won't be.

I think it's a fair question. Sure, Metroid never sets the sales charts on fire and its slow-moving, methodical gameplay isn't the easiest thing to advertise in a short sizzle reel. But come on: Nintendo has not done a great job selling the game. One of the main trailers spent an inordinate amount of time showing how Samus can open doors, and the most recent teaser was dropped unceremoniously in the middle of a Direct, without so much as an introduction. It's possible the company doesn't know how exactly to communicate the greatness of Beyond, or it's saving all the good stuff for an upcoming in-depth breakdown. But it's also possible that it's obscuring some deficiencies in the game.

I remain optimistic. Metroid is one of the ten best gaming franchises of all time and Retro has made several of the finest games of all time. But I think it's totally reasonable to be a little anxious.

I agree that the marketing for this game have been very weird. There was a moment I thought Nintendo wanted to revamp the Metroid franchise with Metroid Prime 4 the same way it did to The Legend of Zelda with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But after so long time of waiting, we were given only small trailers with confusing info (Samus on a bike out of nowhere) and uninteresting features (Samus with psychic powers that she can use to open doors). If it turns out as good as the others Metroid Prime games, tough, it will still be an excellent game.. but not enough to revamp the franchise

I think it will be a good, but not great, game

Nothing particularly wrong with the trailers, but nothing exactly screaming "must play" for me either

More of X is never a bad thing, when X is actually good. I never considered for a second that this game was in trouble. I mean, yeah, it didn’t look innovative or impressive in the videos, but a game like this will probably just never particularly impress in those kinds of promo’s. It’s a slower more thoughtful game.

I've always managed to get Metroid games at healthy discounts by not buying at launch. I've always found them to be reasoanbly well discounted after a while. Despite loving fps games this is not in my A list of such games and I've always hated the 2D Metroid games which are not my thing at all. However I strongly suspect this could be the last original Switch game I buy but you never know I just won't buy it in the launch period. I had a lot more fun with various fps games on original Xbox and PS2 back in the day of Gamecube but again it was rich in atmosphere and looked fantastic for the day but just didn't like the gameplay mechanics as much. I guess I was more locked into normal fps controls. I dislike any sort of game where you have to keep backtracking or finding a specific item and when it comes to puzzles I can do them but don't necessarily enjoy doing them if that makes sense. I've looked at the trailer and other various snippets of gameplay and it looks decent to me and an upgrade over older versions, I feel like it could be a good game in fact it quite possibly could be my favourite Metroid game. At this point I'm definitely interested in buying but I have so many games to get through on steam, many great fps games and many of those were less than £5. I wouldn't be interested in paying £40 or more for Metroid on Switch. I guess I'll be looking for a price around £25 maybe secondhand is 3 months time or more. That may not be possible so I may be priced out of buying it unless its an absolutely amazing game that I must have but it doesn't look that good. When you are a multi-format gamer you look at game pricing in a different light I feel. Nintendo stands out as charging too much most of the time for their own titles. Sometimes they are worth paying that but sometimes not. There does seem a lot of negativity for this title which wasn't really expecting at this point based on what I've seen. Maybe despite being a great game it won't sell well and the price of the game will drop fairly quickly. I'm also curious how a new exclusive game optimised for Switch 2 but also available on Switch 1 will sell. I wonder will Switch 1 owners happily accept an inferior version or will it put them off buying until they have a Switch 2. I believe the upgrade to the Switch 2 version is just visual the core game remains the same and even the original Switch version still plays at 60fps at 1080p docked. Personally I don't think the upgrade is a big deal especially as you can play it on the OLED Switch which is a much more pleasant display.

It will also be interesting to see how the Switch 1 version sells in comparison to Switch 2. Often the older format slows down when a new model comes out but in Japan Switch is still a huge active format selling about half the hardware numbers of Switch 2 in the Switch 2 launch period so will maintain a huge user base lead for quite sometime. I guess many Switch 2 owners will buy the Switch 1 version just so they can play both versions assuming there will be a upgrade fee option like other games. I assume if you just buy the Switch 2 version you don't have access to the Switch 1 version.
