Forums - Movies & TV - Sequels that are better than the originals

I'm gonna give a shout to Gamera 3 for being better than both the 1995 reboot that started the trilogy, (though that was still a fun film) and the 1965 original (which admittedly was pretty poor) Just a superior film across the board from story to acting to effects to music.

I'll also throw in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Top Gun Maverick.

I know most will probably disagree, but I'd take Blade Runner 2049 over the original.

Also, I'd take The Terminator over Terminator 2, so I disagree with those saying the sequel is better.

All of the above are great films of course.

I would actually agree with you there. The original is a classic, but I found the sequel even better. Just felt more consistent, where the original had amazing highs but some rough spots.

Gonna go out on a limb here and say Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Yes, I'm a broken record I know. I've been praising this movie since 2017 and it's never stopped blowing my mind (and it still doesn't make sense to me that this is a hot take).

It took what was my favorite movie back then and just expanded on it so much. It's better than the original because it focuses 100% on what made the first movie special: The characters.

We had a deeper look into all of the main characters, got to explore their deeper fears, and how those scars affected their companionship. This is a sequel that understood that the most compelling conflict you can have in a story is the one we each carry within - and ultimately, it's a conflict no one can resolve on their own, but it gets easier to deal with when you're surrounded by people who truly care.

Of course, the movie gets an actual supervillain too, but Ego the character is as much the villain here as actual ego. And by making the villain someone who actually matters to the story of the protagonist, that makes every part of the story compelling - a contrast to the first movie which can really drag whenever the villains are on-screen.

I went into the theater to watch this genuinely stressed about how it'd live up to a film I loved so dearly, and came out of the theater blown away and with a real certainty that this was going to be my favorite trilogy. Because, yeah, after this it was very obvious that James Gunn could do no wrong with these characters.

Guardians is good, but I never understood the love for the first one so much. Even people who love the second still prefer the first most of the time.

Guardians Vol. 2 is a Top 10 MCU movie, maybe even getting closer to the Top 5. Emotional, a much better main villain, funnier, and I think the Awesome Mix of songs is even better than the first.

Terminator 2 is maybe the best example of a good movie that went great in the sequel

Certainly up there but I think the nod goes to Empire.

Agreed. The Terminator was already a GREAT movie, even if T2 ended up being even better.

A New Hope was an ok movie that was saved by a great and novel world with tons of potential. But Empire? Empire was a GREAT movie and completely blew ANH away. Even if you don't like Star Wars or fantasy science fiction that much, it's still a very well done movie with a lot going for it.

My favourite sequels of all time are Terminator 2, Aliens, and Dawn of the Dead (1978)… those three films were cinematically groundbreaking sequels to three stellar and iconic franchise debuts. I’d also say Evil Dead 2 is better than the original in every single way… and much like Terminator 2 had an element of parody on the original film.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

All been previously mentioned but The Dark Knight, Empire Strikes Back, Wrath of Khan and LOTR The Two Towers. Probably chamber of secrets as well.

A lot of the other common ones that come up: Spider-Man 2, Captain America Winter Soldier, Shrek 2, Toy Story 2. I generally prefer the original, or at least is only on par.
