I don't remember the exact year or how old I was. But it was a Game and Watch. Donkey Kong I believe. I did not own it myself, but a school mate did and let me play it.

Playing Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World with my mom.

Interesting that we have so many NES veterans here! Suddenly I feel like the relative newcomer as an SNES kid haha

Goes to show how much of an impact that system had at the time I guess, that so many got their start with it.

My roommate at the time got a Wii and Wii Sports. I bought Zelda for it and then a DS.

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

10 years greatest game event!

Depends of where you were I guess, and how old you were.

As someone who was already in my later teens when NES hit the Europe, Europe that didn't have VG crash and was happily playing on C64 and other home computers (with 16-bit Amiga 500 showing up around the same time, which blew our minds), I can't really remember any of my friends that were gaming showing much interest in it.

I guess, it was mostly about perception - we mostly looked at console games as something for smaller kids, as opposed to high-schoolers we were - I know, right. But what did we know back then. LOL

Came from the Atari 2600 to Mario Bros 3 on the NES... It was a massive leap to me back then.

Yeah I was a little too young for the NES, by the time my parents got me my first console at the end of 1994, it was well into the SNES's life, which started in 1992 here in Australia.

The NES didn't take Australia by storm quite like it did American or Japan either; it wasn't even distributed by Nintendo here, but by a third party, Mattel. Console gaming didn't really take off Down Under until the 90s.

Game Boy was our first Nintendo system. Growing up in the UK Sega was king so we had the Master System followed by a megadrive which left Nintendo filling in the handheld space. That changed when our next home system was the N64 and I've been a Nintendo fan ever since!

The first Nintendo ip I played was Donkey Kong on the Coleco Vision.  I don't recall The year.  Several friends had Atari or an NES that I would play when over, but it was a little while before I got my own.  I purchased the NES around '87? from a department store called Nichols for around $150.  It was packed with SMB and Duck Hunt on one cartridge and the lightgun was orange, not gray.

I had an independant movie rental store nearby that had quite a variety of Nintendo games, and I recall playiing Q-bert, Joust, RC Pro-am, River City Ransom, Wizards and Warriors and Shadowgate.  Of course, I also had Zelda, Mario 2/3, Contra, Bad Dudes, P.O.W. Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Double Dragon...and the list goes on and on.

For anyone that complains about the cost of games these days, I recall my mother paying almost $60. after tax for the OG Zelda for my buddy's bday.  Almost 40 years later and games are only $70-$80.  It's an absolute steal, for the cost per hour of entertainment.
