Forums - Sony - What should Sony do for the next Playstation?

I already made the decision to not buy the PS6, but Sony can change my mind by doing one thing. Full backwards compatibility with all previous PS systems with discs and digital. Just make the PS1 - PS3 emulators be part of the PS6 and improve it overtime and I'll be there. My PS1 - PS3 won't last forever.

That would be beyond awesome. Megaton of megatons.

Go 3rd party and release their games on Nintendos consoles.

Switch 3 $1,200 USD confirmed.

They should Focus on 4 points.

1 ) Make good and cheap hardware. The leaks are pointing at something good, they just need to nail pricing. ( IMHO, $499 is the Sweet spot )

2 ) Focus on making games faster. The quality is great, but Playstation needs to deliver more 1° party titles.

3 ) Make PS5 and PS6 with the same Disc Drive, same controller, etc. Gaming is becoming more expensive, i don't want to buy new accessories.

4 ) keep games at $50-70.

Is that your only reason? Do you intend on not buying a new system to play new games?

Maybe a few new games, but I'm going full PC for the next generation. Unless it's a game I want to double dip and have a physical copy of, I would mainly use the PS6 to play older PS games. Like I said my PS1, PS2, and PS3 cannot last forever, so newer hardware that can run those games would be great.

Depends a lot on whether they're going to do a handheld or not and whether it'll be next gen hardware.
If that were true, with a next gen handheld SKU around 2027, I don't see why PS5 couldn't remain relevant for the entirety of next gen as a cheaper $399 home console. SNY could just keep selling PS5 alongside PS6, even if that meant a Super Slim PS5 model. However instead of spending money on engineering a PS5 Super Slim, maybe it would be better to spend money engineering a cheap $399 PS6, and discontinue PS5, I dunno. Yet SNY is going to want to offer something more than the PS5 Pro, so they could offer PS6 Pro right from the start as well, so you end up with either 1 old and 2 new SKU's or 3 new SKU's next gen.

PS5or(PS6) - $399 - 10TF or 12TF
PS6Portable-$499 - 5TF or 6TF
PS6 (Pro) - $599 - 20TF or 24TF
Shorten this generation to 6 years if need be.

For me at least they can just keep the PS5 around for another ten years and maybe start to bring some more games. The tech is good enough. If I wanted more I would get a PC anyway. Hell, how about a PS5 Pro Pro. A little more horsepower for all the people who really want it, but without sacrificing the whole install base. There really is no need anymore for hard cuts in generations.

I wouldn't recommend bringing a handheld or a hybrid though. Everytime Sony tried to directly compete with Nintendo, they failed miserably. =P

Personally I don't like the idea of the leak where SNY goes with just a handheld and console for PS6, because I find it unlikely that SNY is going to heavily subsidize the home console. To me that says you're going to get something like a $399-$499 handheld and $599 or higher home console.
Now that can work, if they make a PS5 Super Slim, and sell it alongside PS6 for the entire gen, for something like $399, but if they drop support for PS5 sometime during next gen, then I don't like the only 2 new SKU solution. I'm not paying $599 for a home console, and I don't want a (dockable) handheld or the compromises that come with it, no matter the price. I'm not alone in that viewpoint either. That also would mean no PS hardware purchase next gen for me, which means another brands hardware, or a PC, where my third party games will no longer be purchased through PS. Only their first party, when they seem worth it, if they get around to making them.

Unless SNY reaches deep into their pockets and were to offer the next step beyond PS5 Pro performance, with a $499 PS6, in which case I can live with that and would purchase a unit as soon as I could get my hands on one after launch.

I'm fine with a PS5 next gen as well. Just make it affordable in today's climate.

The obvious move for the handheld would be x86. This should mean not only would there be no lack of software support whatsoever, but it could probably play most if not all PS games, other than PS3 maybe.

The not so obvious would be to partner with Nvidia and make something very similar to SW2, assuming SNY is going to, or is thinking of putting some if not a fair amount of their games on SW2. That way porting games to SW2 should be a piece of cake, since it would pretty much be done already for their own handheld, as well as a super easy backup plan if the handheld did fail, where they're basically already porting to SW2 anyway.

Either plan could work, but regardless of how well SNY executes, I don't see them breaking 50M units sold. I think they'd be lucky to hit that number even if they do everything right. They'd definitely sell far more home consoles than (dockable) handhelds.

As long as Sony keeps supporting PC, which they should (money is in software, not hardware), I don't care what the ps6 does. Will be PC+S2.

A Playstation handheld would not compete with Nintendo. It'll just be the console equivalent of SteamDeck, a small piece constituting something much bigger (like PS4/5 Pro). Playstation Portal outpaced the SteamDeck without the ability to play games natively. A PS6 handheld should do better even if it's 2-3 times the price.
