Forums - Sony - What should Sony do for the next Playstation?

I just can't see the benefit, honestly.

If both PS6's were the same internal hardware, same clocks, then that means only like 2.5 systems to dev for. PS6 would all be identical, and PS5 and PS5 Pro are like 1.5 systems since they're so similar.

If both PS7's were the same internal hardware, same clocks, then that means only 2 systems to dev for in the future.

With the way prices are now, if SNY stays with the same hardware business model, then cross gen will likely become an even bigger thing. Many gamers are likely going to stay on their PS5's for as long as possible. How many PS5 gamers would transition to the PS6 handheld? How many would be willing to pay $699-$899 for the (high end) console?

If SNY decided to launch a PS6 Lite as well, assuming it's the same internal hardware as the handheld, same clocks, then that's not a problem for devs at all, but it is a burden for SNY if they keep PS5 around, because that's 5 systems to confuse consumers. SNY would almost certainly have to discontinue PS5 and PS5 Pro as soon as next gen started.

If SNY does have 3 SKU's for PS6, then what do they do come mid gen? Launch a PS6 Pro console? Have 4 consoles available at once, or drop the high end PS6 and replace it with the PS6 Pro? When do you launch that Pro console if you're going to, and how long does this gen last, with or without the Pro model?

Launching a PS7 just 5 years later doesn't solve any of these conundrums though.

It would be a change, but I wouldn't call it radical. Cross gen already exists, and between similar enough hardware. Devs are already making games that span 4 systems at a time, again, which are all similar enough hardware.

The main difference really would be marketing, because you'd now have 2 new systems that would likely be weaker than PS5 Pro, but would be considered next gen. Best case the PS6 console would be about equal to PS5 Pro. That would only be a problem for PS6 though because by PS7 you should be beyond PS5 Pro capabilities.

I just can't see the benefit, honestly.

I'd like if console hardware was released more often though my idea is different from his. If the PS6 comes out in 2028 I'd like to see a more powerful version released in 2030, 2032 and 2034 before releasing a PS7 in 2036. That would help avoid situations like FF7 Rebirth where on Playstation someone had to choose between 30fps or 60fps but with poor image quality till the PS5 Pro came out.

Well, well - Linux is now running on PS5 and PC games via Steam have been tested on it. Given that this is all unofficial, and it's running through conversion layers and custom drivers, surprisingly good results.

It does if you keep the hardware at a reasonably low cost. Which would be easy to do if the handheld and console shared internal hardware.

You may have to wait for many PS5 gamers to skip PS6 and upgrade to PS7 in this case, but at that time you'll still have great sales between both PS6 and PS7 and you'll have far easier development for those 2 systems, since there's really only 2 pieces of hardware to dev for even though there's 4 retail systems on shelves.

This should certainly help when it comes to game development and getting games out sooner than later, which is becoming more and more of a problem, along with rising software prices.

PS6 is already going to be a bit of a different business model to begin with based on the leaks so far. A handheld and home console, that shares a library.

The only way I see PS6 selling well overall based on the leaks, is if the PS6 handheld is heavily subsidized (assuming there's no PS6 Lite), or if they also launch a PS6 Lite for as cheap as possible.

If the PS6 Lite doesn't exist, or the handheld isn't cheap enough, plenty of PS5 gamers won't transition because the PS6 main console will be too expensive. PS4 gamers still won't transition to PS6. Plenty of new consumers won't buy into PS6 because they won't be able to afford to. This would be a bad situation for SNY.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

They're definitely in a pickle with PS6, but I'm not convinced a stopgap solution is the answer. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Too much hardware too fast. They want the min hardware they have to make while at least keeping their existing userbase. If it doesn't grow then so be it, but I can only see them attempting what you're asking for if they know it'll grow the userbase considerably. I personally don't think it would.

With all the gamers I've seen that say they're (totally) ok with PS5 lasting until 2030, I personally think SNY should launch the PS6 handheld asap, but as a part of 9th gen, and subsidize it so it's $499 or less. Either call it something unique, while making the marketing super clear that it plays PS5 and PS4 games (and also possibly future PS6 games), or call it a PS5 and make it clear it's part of the PS5 ecosystem. Extend 9th gen to 3032 if need be because of this.

Heck if they were worried about the hardcore high end hardware gamers not wanting to wait that long for new tech, then launch the main PS6 as a new PS5 Pro (while dropping the old PS5 Pro). This should easily extend 9th gen until 2032.

I don't think SNY is going to do this though, even though I totally think it would work.

I was mainly talking from the consumer perspective there since having more hardware options is always good. In terms of it'd be more beneficial or negative for Sony I think the impact would be small either way.

Ya I got that. I wouldn't mind it either, who wouldn't? But that doesn't take many corporate things into account and the company always gets favored over the consumer when it comes to future products and services.

There are actually people against Pro consoles and would prefer if they stopped getting made. For the corporate side one benefit would be keeping up with PC better. The market conditions would've prevented them from releasing new hardware in 2022 but if that wasn't a factor then that would've helped let them notably close the gap with 2023 PCs.
