Forums - Politics - Who's the Best World Leader Today?

Sheinbaum and Zelenskyy take my vote. I'm also keeping my eye on Mark Carney, to see if he can navigate Canada through a threat to its national sovereignty as well as Canadian issues like high housing costs. Other than that, I'm thoroughly unimpressed with the current crop of world leaders, as well as aspirants like Poilievre (Canadian Trump) and Dutton (Australian Trump, complete with his own Musk, Rinehart).

I'd say Putin, because he governs over not just Russia, but also the USA.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

I would say Netanyahu in that case as he rules over most of the Western world while keeping the ME too weak to respond. Putin can use his own Veto power, Netanyahu has the US and UK do it for him. The US is currently being governed by 2 outside leaders.

Netanyahu managed to completely break international law as well as the UN and has Western countries attack their own freedom of speech, immigration laws and education.

But that's a contest for the most notorious world leader. Which could as well be Trump breaking the entire world economy.

Putin, Netanyahu, Trump, all sides of the same coin, making Xi and Ali Khamenei look like peace prophets...

Trump, Pierre if he gets in in Canada, that Polish guy sounds good

LOL, Trump was already considered to be the worst US president by most historians after his first term.  His second term is going to be even worse anyway enjoy the upcoming recession and higher prices on everything because of his stupid trade wars.

Also, since you are using Robert Downey Jr as a username and avatar this is a perfect reply to your comment:

Trump is not just the worst current leader in Western civilization, but probably the worst US President in history. His regime has fostered stupidity across the US in the form of MAGA, his trade taxation is working to crush the US economy. Through a combination of greed and incompetence, he has spread greater strife and uncertainty across Western civilization than any Western leader has done since early-mid 20th century. He's hated, because he's not just terrible, but has only injected textbook stupidity into the US policy (See Cipolla's five laws of stupidity, or Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison to see parallels to the nature of stupidity they criticize)

It's not a bad case you offer, but to be strictly technical about it, as one of those nerds who likes to do things like rank the presidents of my country for fun (it's an outgrowth of my list fetish ), I feel that people tend to somewhat exaggerate the importance of their own times. Trump is definitely one of the worst presidents we've ever had as far as I'm concerned, but anyone who thinks he's THE worst probably isn't familiar with the likes of James Buchanan, for example, whose actions were so aggressively pro-slavery that it literally broke the country in two, leading directly to a four-year civil war. We have had some really, really bad presidents before. I personally have him ranked in as our fourth-worst. We're living in a kind of second Gilded Age, I believe, and I think of Trump as a Gilded Age mindset type of leader who I rank accordingly.

I have sort of a working list of the IMO ten best presidents we've ever had to contrast with what the worst ones represent:

1. Abraham Lincoln
2. Franklin Roosevelt
3. George Washington
4. Thomas Jefferson
5. Teddy Roosevelt
6. Woodrow Wilson
7. Lyndon Johnson

Buchanan's interference in the Dred Scott case was unforgivable.

However, I will say that the country was already under low-grade guerilla warfare before Buchanan took office (Bleeding Kansas), and if it hadn't been Dred Scott, it would have been something else. The country was an ever-growing powder keg from the time the Three Fifths Compromise was written into the main body of the Constitution. Something else would have sparked it.

The Mexican-American War, and the fights over the slave status of Texas and California, was probably where civil war became an inevitability.

Lincoln's election was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Can't help agreeing with your assessment, especially in that the Mexican-American War led directly to the infamous fugitive slave law that really forced the non-slavery states to care about the issue of slavery everywhere in the country. It famously inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe to author the legendary Uncle Tom's Cabin, among many other things. The whole trajectory began in earnest though with that particular war.

Historical inevitability does not absolve Buchanan by a long shot though. Certainly not his malign acceleration of the crisis, let alone his lack of action even after states began to secede.

Carney may be a 'world' leader, but Canada, 'later, whenever we get around to it', isn't gunna fly, or a bunch of 'geese', will.

Enough of the circus. The memetrix is getting downright ridiculous.

That guy from El Salvadore seems pretty based. Can't believe he cleaned up that place but extreme measures will be needed for a country run by criminals. Mexico will have to do the same if they wanna retake their country.
