Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Normal microSD cards pretty useless in Switch 2?

I got lucky and got my 256 gb express for $40.00 while on sale from sandisk website. Definitely was a bummer when I saw regular SD was useless on Switch 2. Would have gotten the 512gb if I had realized they were on sale and would go up.

It's BS that we can't use normal microSD for Switch titles.
You can use HDDs for PS4 games and even cold storage of PS5 games on PS5. Same with the Xbox Series and Xbox One games.
Thankfully Switch 2 is coming with 256 GB (but not all usable) but it would be nice to use cheaper microSD if wanted for our Switch games.
I don't know what size microSD Express I'll get when I get Switch 2 but probably 256 or 512. 128 GB seems too small.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Yup. Best get an Express card now if you plan on Switch 2 cause this is one thing that Nintendo can't control for users.

Eh...not really.

More companies could produce more express cards and these cards tend to go on sale during holidays.

No point in buying them now especially since the internal storage should last majority of people for awhile.

Going out and buying the Lexar one for $200 is overkill at this time.

They're not going to change much, as they're mainly focusing on increasing the rendering quality and fps (4k60). The actual game assets are the same. Maybe if TOTK and Bayonetta have pre-rendered cutscenes included at 4k that might cause a decent increase but I wouldn't expect anything notable

Yeah, the difference between the digital Switch 1 versions and the digital SW2-enhanced versions is probably not big.

But for Switch1-cartridges, I wonder if only the upgrade data is stored on the internal memory (or on microSD Express) and the rest of the game is read from the cartridge.

Or will the cartridge only be used as copy protection and the full game + enhancements is stored in the internal memory (or on microSD Express)... similar to Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One/Series.

Ooph, just switch cartridges with a switch 2 patch code. That's pretty dodgy on Nintendo's part

Downloaded Switch 1 games should definitely work on any microSDXC card

As shown in the table below, SD Express limits the speed of older SD cards to a maximum of UHS-1 speed (104MB/s)... but that should still be largely enough for those titles

In fact, I doubt many SD cards in Switch consoles even were anywhere near this fast. In fact, I think remembering that the OG Switch (dunno about the other versions) didn't have connectors for the second row of pins on a UHS-II/III card.

1. On PS5, you can play PS4 games directly from USB-devices (SATA-SSDs, HDDs) and you can store PS5-downloads on them... just move the one you wanna play now into internal storage.

2. On Xbox Series, you can play XBO + 360 games directly from USB-devices (SATA-SSDs, HDDs) and you can store XBS-downloads on them... just move the one you wanna play now into internal storage.

3. On Steam Deck (and other PC handhelds), you can play any PC game from normal SD cards... if there are performance problems, just move that game to internal storage.

1. and 2. PS4 and XBO/360 games are made to be able to run from the disc (even though most needed installation). An 8x Blu-Ray drive tops out at a measly 36MB/s transfer speed, something even USB 2.0 from 2000 with a max practical speed of ~50MB/s could keep up with with, let alone a more modern 3.x device or a not-totally-trash HDD. Also keep in mind that since most games of last gen needed to be installed (for storage reasons, not transfer speed), they were standard to be installed on a HDD anyway. Switch should have gone a similar war to allow Switch1 games to run on SD cards and only Switch2 games needing SD Express cards

3. This is how the Switch should have handled this issue. I do expect however that going forward less and less games will run from an SD card as more and more games put an SSD under minimum configuration.

One question that I still have is with the save data from games on the switch, hopefully that one can also be transferred that way...

Damn...imagine going and buying physical thinking you'll get the full game for Switch 2 but its just the Switch 1 copy with a code for the upgrade pack.

If you had the physical copy of the game on Switch - just buy the upgrade pack (or if you have NSO, get it from there).

Or not...

That's what I expected, the question in the original tweet was just about the upgrade of an existing Switch version of the game, not a new cartridge. Why some people always jump to conclusions like that, I'll never know.
