Because Nvidia practically gave Nintendo a ton of chips they had left over and couldn't sell for free (at break even point).
Switch 1, shouldn't have launched at 299$.
That was Nintendo being greedy for 50-100$ profit margins on hardware console sales.

I think the Switch 2, selling in Japan for 335$ shows, that they can sell it at that amount and not lose money on sales.
So why is it 450$ in rest of the world? Greed. Nintendo arn't happy just selling their hardware and not loseing money on each sale.
They want to make profits selling the console as well.

Nintendo MILK their costumers more than Xbox or Playstation does.
Nintendo games skimp on alot of stuff, that the others can't.
Text bubbles (no voice acting), not going for realistic graphics which is much easier and cheaper to develope ect.
And it still wants 80-90$ pr game now?  F*** off.

This is too much imo.

*IF* Nintendo wasn't as greedy as it is, I bet they could have had a 200million console seller in the 1st switch.

And Honestly these prices could hurt them, they are high enough I'm not sure it'll repeat the 1st switch's success (ei. pass 140m)

*edit:

Switch 2 is able to play Switch 1 games.
So you think, great, its more powerfull maybe it can run them at more consistant fps, or resolutions? or there is some patch you download and it runs better! right?
Yeaah.... guess what? You pay for that.  Upgrade Packs are what they call them (ei. small patches for games, that others would give out for free).

Even the tutorial game (mini game) that teaches you about the tech, in the Switch 2, and how its used.... costs money.
Remember when Astrabot was this small mini game that was free? a tiny game like that, on the Switch 2, will cost money.
Its like selling a product, and then going "if you want the manual on how to use this thing, that'll be 20$ more".

I seriously think Nintendo has lost the plot.... this is too much.
I hope they walk back the prices on games atleast.

*edit 2:

Imagine if Playstation 5, started asking for people to pay to play PS5 games, on the Pro at higher settings/resolutions?
This is basically what Nintendo is doing with these "upgrade packs".   Imagine the hate, they would get. Nintendo does it, nothing said by anyone?

Pay to chat online with your friends, too... like what?

feels like a "Aggrogant Sony PS3 moment" Nintendo version.

I am getting flashbacks from eight years ago when you kept misunderstanding things about Switch, including Nintendo's statement that around 200 games are in development for Switch and you infered that means Switch will get only 200 games during its entire lifetime. Your posts here are much the same.

1. Switch sold well at $300 for many years, so you saying that Nintendo shouldn't charged that much is devoid of business sense and reality. You are just bitter that you've been so wrong about it eight years ago and still aren't over it.

2. Being upset at a console manufacturer for wanting to sell hardware at a profit takes us back to the PS3 days when Sony fans repeatedly called Nintendo dishonorable.

3. When it comes to milking, how many microtransactions do Nintendo games have in comparison with what's going on on PS and Xbox? You are fighting a losing battle here.

4. Switch games that have merely performance updates on Switch 2 are free updates to download. The upgrade packs you have to pay for provide additional features.

5. I can't imagine that anyone is eager to play Switch 2's tech demo based on what they've shown of it. If you feel like you are forced to pay for it, just LOL.

6. If you want to chat with your friends, you likely also want to play games with them which means that you are an NSO member at which point you've already also paid for the chat functionality.

The "C" button is for the chat funktion..... which will be free like a while... and then, locked behinde a paywall.

There will be like a promt that goes "oh, you press "C!", would you like to pay? to access this feature?"
Yes or No ?

Like imagine that... a button that does nothing, because its pay to use.
For there will be people out there, playing, who arn't paying, and for them this will be a useless button, that might trigger a annouying pop up promt, if you accidentally press it.

Also...

499$ for Switch 2 bundled with Mario Kart.
Then 90$ for the pro controller, and 60$ for another SDcard, so you have 256 internally and 256 on the card (for a total of 512gb).
Maybe 50$ for the camra? so you can try out the chat function?
And then paying a subscription to use it, and online play.

People need to fork out like 700$ for this.

If you aren't an NSO member, then many games will have menu points that take you to a screen where you are asked to pay for online. I can't imagine this is any different on PS and Xbox.

I hope you realize that when you do your silly $700 example for Switch, you'd have to do the same for the PS5 where you pay for the console, additional storage, PSVR2, PS+ and PS Portal. Where does that get you? In the neighborhood of $1200, probably. What was that about milking again?

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

The PS3's $600 launch price is $950 in today's dollars ... give your head a shake if you're comparing a $499.99 Switch 2 that includes Mario Kart World to that.

This is no where close to that.

Well then, the cost of living crisis is all nonsense then and the Switch 2 will sell 150m. The inflation argument is way too simplistic, the large majority of people spending power is so much lower today; plenty of peoples wages do not keep up with inflation. The small minority of people on the internet are so devoid of reality it makes me laugh, perhaps obtain a job within politics.

I have Switch 1 vibes in this thread

Yeah only big wig rich people are buying up those $350 Switch OLEDs and $500 PS5s. Switch sales totally collapsed the last 2-3 years when Nintendo refused to budge on giving people a big price cut as they have in the past ... except they totally didn't do that.

Fact of the matter is in the big picture, gaming is still a pretty cheap hobby. Even $500 for a device you will use for 5+ years is not that expensive, yes even in today's climate.

It's $18-$20 to go a movie theater, all streaming services are raising their prices minus Netflix offering one token tier where you have to sit through commercials to watch, restaurants and bars are all significantly more expensive than 10-15 years ago live sports events and concerts? LOL. Good luck. You can drop $500 in  a night. Getting a kid a $500 Switch 2 is a lot cheaper than that trip to Disney you promised, but most of Nintendo's fans today are grown adults anyway.

The LEGO NES set is $300 alone ... that's a LEGO set (a literal toy that plays no games).

For whatever reason gaming is supposed to be the only hobby where things stay at 2005 pricing forever.  I've been consistent on this before too, when we got word on some of the specs of the Switch 2 ... this was not going to be a budget/cheap priced system and that was months ago.

If PS5 can smash its own personal sales records with a $500 PS5 (despite lackluster first-party output), I do not see the $450 NSW2 flopping too hard. It’ll very likely dominate the industry for the next 7-8y. Gamers are hungry for games, and Nintendo is offering the most attractive dishes. They’ve practically got a monopoly on games at this moment.

I'm also curious to see wether PS5 can keep its current sales trend (I think in current state of the market outselling PS4 is a given, since it's almost confirmed PS5 will have at least one additional year before replacement)

Switch had a total of 0 impact in PS4 trajectory outside Japan, market where PS5 is already so dead Switch 2 is a non-factor. I think it's because for a significant number of buyers Switch was an additional console, with lower price point and lower spending in software (games, services, in gaming purchases, etc). It couldn't be seen as a replacement for PS4 in the sense most of AAA games couldn't run on Switch

Switch 2 however is a different story. Even AAA games are still cross gen with PS4 support, except for a handful titles like the iminent GTA6 the absolute majority of games will be playable in Series S and Switch 2. It can be for all intents and purposes a primary console AKA you might not need a PS5 at all if you have a Switch 2

So comes the question, is Switch 2 eating the Sony's market share...

...or perhaps is Xbox the one now completely doomed?

Because for Sony they at least have some first party offers and thr occasional third party money hated titles (and of course the already existing library you want to carry given you had a PS4)

For XBOX consumers have... game pass I guess?

Just thoughts I was having

That first line is nonsense: Sony *does* offer “PS5 Edition” upgrades which are distributed in a nearly identical manner to what Nintendo is doing. If you already own the OG NSW version, it’s a cheap upgrade fee of (I’d imagine like) $10.

That last line is misguided: The significance of the PS3 pricing disaster is that it annihilated hardware sales. There have been maaaany instances as of late where gaming businesses decide to shoot up prices and get away with it: $700 PS5 Pro, $70 games, Early Access scams, Content hidden behind paywalls, etc. Unfortunately, this situation will be no different b/c ultimately there is no publisher quite like Nintendo when it comes to quality. They make the best games, and so, they get to call the shots. They will succeed in ripping off consumers, and that’s just what it is. My only hope is that the rest of the industry doesn’t follow in their footsteps…though I already see GTAVI costing over $100 at this point.

Lower price point is the reason why consoles (and gaming) became so popular in the 2000s. Back in the 90s, consoles sold less, and games even less. There comes a point where people simply can’t afford to play games and choose to spend their money on other hobbies instead. Kids and teenagers mostly play free-to-play live service games anyway

I think the console market is finally reaching the point where it will become cost-prohibitive for many. They always were outside America, Europe and certain Asian countries but now the main markets will be affected. The decline of PS5 in Europe compared to PS4 will show that, Switch 2 selling significantly less than Switch 1 there is almost a given

Generations will become pointless when a significant part of userbase refuse to upgrade because upgrading is becoming too expensive. Better to just buy a cheap PC for 450 USD and give your kid to play Minecraft and Fortinite instead of giving a 450 USD Switch 2, the share of older games in the steam most played displays a tendency of power upgrades (CPU, GPUs and Memory) being less and less required over time gives PCs much longer lifespans than what they used to have back in the 2000s

The PS3 suffered from more than just its high price. It suffered from the E3 "real-time gameplay" lies that set up completely unrealistic expectations and made Sony seem untrustworthy, then it had a terrible launch that was filled with mediocre games and 1 highlight in Resistance. At the same time as Sony's terrible launch lineup, the Wii was launching with a much more appealing lineup of games and a sense of pure fun, while the 360 got Gears of War, which was miles better than anything the PS3 had in 2006. Then people started to realize that despite the hype of the PS3 being the most powerful system ever with its cell processor, multiplats often ran worse on it than on the 360. It was a perfect storm of things going wrong.
