Physical games are basically ending. Think people just need to accept it.

This is Nintendo's first 4k system, it's going to take them longer to make games now.  The new Mario game isn't ready for launch, would you rather they delay the system until it's ready?

4k? I saw it whas 1080p and docked upgraded to sorta 4k.

Signal output resolution are 1080p up to 120fps or 4K up to 60fps - those are not native rendering resolutions, but, of course, that is not mutually exclusive.

- Also a bit concerned that they made it clear there isn't 100% backwards compatibility, but hopefully it's just means it's like 99% of games and only a handfull of games can't make it for some reason.

- Elden Ring announcement wow!!!! Definitely plan on getting this game. Though I'm a bit confused about the "Tarnished Edition" part. Does that mean it has extra things...or does that mean it is downgraded? Assuming it's a good port this would definitely be the first AAA third party game I get on Switch 2 as it's one of the main games from the consoles the past 5 years that I've been interested in.

It's understandable to not promise that every game will be backwards compatible. You never know if one game may be troublesome to get to an acceptable playable state for whatever reason, and then you may have a false advertisement lawsuits on your hand.

So it should be standard practice to not promise that.
PS5 did the same, but I have still not heard of a PS4 game that isn't backwards compatible.

I think the "Tarnished Edition" indicates that it will include the DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree.
There was at least one case where a subtitle on Switch indicated a downgraded version (I believe it was a FIFA game running on an older engine), but Elden Ring should not have any issues on Switch 2.
It's a cross-gen PS4 title which ran at 30 fps there, and I expect the Switch 2 version to run at 60fps while looking the same, which was the case for the PS5 version.
Although it wasn't stable 60fps, even on PS5 Pro for some reason. So we'll have to see how Switch 2 handles that. But I'm expecting it somewhere in that range.

Elden Ring is great. You can make it as difficult or easy as you want it to be, since they allow you to explore most of the world right from the start. And very few bosses require defeating in order to progress. Maybe just 2 or 3? Not counting the final boss segment.
So if you have trouble with a boss, you can go somewhere else, find powerful equipment out in the world, or take on any of the other 100+ bosses and then come back hours later and one-shot the boss that gave you trouble.

Yes but my point is every successful launch for Nintendo has had either mainline Mario or Zelda. SNES had SMW, N64 M64, Gamecube didn't and it did very poorly, Wii had TP tho of course Wii Sports was the main thing there, WiiU had 2D Mario instead of 3D Mario and the system was a complete failure (for many other reasons too of course), Switch had BotW. Switch 2 obviously wasn't going to have Zelda at launch or any time in the next few years, so 3D Mario was 100% expected, instead it wasn't even shown and they have no major single player first party game at launch. And DK is much less popular than Mario and isn't even coming out until 6 weeks after launch.

There's no way to sugar coat it, that particular aspect (which is important) is a HUGE blunder by Nintendo.

Mario Kart looks incredible, but no 3D Mario for the launch is simply the biggest mistake Nintendo could make.

These games are not using 4k quality assets lol. 4k is just what they'll upscale/render at... But I'm sure they feel comfortable with their current line up. Mario Kart is the system seller in their eyes.

As opposed to offering a huge visual quality jump over Switch 1, Nintendo seems to be focusing on scaling up the worlds & their interactivity whilst maintaining 60fps/1080p. I do think many of these games are working without any meaningful engine upgrades too. Essentially I don't think they're drastically increasing their developement in the current generational jump. Not like Wii U where it was a huge technical leap over what they had done in the past.

This is a good overall direct. There are basically four new Nintendo games for the year. Charging people to play an upgraded version of a game is pretty awful. The microphone and online stuff made me laugh because everyone else has had good internet features for over a decade. $80 games is B.S. but thanks to Tariffs it's now a reality. The extra $50 pricetag for USA people is annoying too. Thanks Donald Dump.

Good. This lets them get games out in a timely manner, which is a key to their success. Graphics whores can bitch about it all they want but real gamers do not want to wait 7 years for another new game in their favorite franchise.

I will go down kicking and screaming.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

Scalling worlds and physics are significantly harder than improving graphics. There is a miss conception the graphical fidelity is what make games harder and more time consuming to develop. This is untrue. A good evidence for this is Tears of Kingdom, no jump in graphical fidelity and reused graphics and art and still took 6 years to develop due to the complexity of the world and physics

I mean I largely agree but think there is room for both. For now I'm not complaining... but all my favourite Switch games really pushed the technical+artistic boat for the respective teams (BOTW, Odyssey, Pikmin 4). It adds to the magic, so hope the maintain ambition there too

There was always a 5% Nintendo Gold discount for digital plus a way to dodge taxes in the USA and other methods to save money. Nothing is really changing here since 2017.
