Forums - Nintendo Discussion - It's inexcusable if Switch 2 doesn't have boosted backwards compatibility

Does Switch 2 need a boost mode for BC?

Yes 19 35.85%

Meh 7 13.21%

No 7 13.21%

I want it, but it's not a big deal. 20 37.74%

Total:53

It would be nice, but not a deal breaker by any means to me.

Why are we preemptively getting upset about something here?

Maybe it didn't need its own thread I guess and was better in the hype thread.

But backwards compatibility is a pretty interesting topic and boosted Switch games on Switch 2 could be a game-changing experience.

Ok...if you had written, "It would be amazing if Switch 2 upscaled all my Switch 1 games," that certainly would be a Switch Hype post.

I know that you're just hoping and praying that it is included and you can't see how it wouldn't be, but I'm personally not going to be upset if Nintendo doesn't manage to accomplish it.  I'm going to buy a Switch 2 to play Switch 2 games, and the fact that Nintendo has already announced backwards compatibility with Switch 1 games is a huge win in my book. If they look better and load faster on the Switch 2 then it has the chance to supplant the Switch 1 as my favorite Nintendo console of all time right out of the gate.

I don’t give a shit if the graphics don’t change but I would love to see games have a FPS boost

If the N64 did it (expansion pak), then certainly the most modern piece of Nintendo hardware can. So it's not a matter of that, it's a matter of whether or not they want to fund it.

Either way, I don't care. I play SNES, PS1 and N64 games all the time on my CRT. Gameplay is all I care about.

And miss out on the opportunity to change a few lines in a text file and resell the games as remasters? You aren't looking at the business case here. :P

Obviously not all games will get enhanced, some games have fixed framerates, fixed resolutions and have been abandoned by the developer, so it wouldn't matter if you could plug them into a PS5, they will play identically.

Games with uncapped framerates and dynamic resolutions should see gains.

That's provided Nintendo takes a Microsoft approach and lets games run to their maximum capability irrespective of the hardware, rather than limit the hardware for Switch 1.0 compatibility in some way. (I.E. Disable SM's, reduced clocks etc')

Alas. We will need to wait for the reveal to know any of the details on what the backwards compatibility features/nuances/restrictions end up being, we can hypothesize until the cows come home and be completely wrong.

Well, the image quality would disappoint anyone upgrading from an OLED Switch and ditching the old model.

I'm guessing Switch 2 will run the docked mode version of Switch 1 games in its undocked mode. Anything beyond that would be a pleasant surprise.

It will be on a game by game basis. Some games code was shown to play in 4K resolution if the right mode was activated, I believe the game in question was Paper Mario TTYD. Those games that are not coded for it will probably not be getting any other upgrade than what Haxxiy mentions, but anything is possible.

It’s not really a yes or no answer. It will be up to the individual publishers whether they want to provide a frame rate or resolution boost.

For Nintendo games I think it will be a mixed bag where less popular games get nothing, more popular games get either a simple free boost or a more comprehensive paid ’remaster’.

I'm not expecting it to be universal for boosting, it's not universal on Xbox or PlayStation.

The option just has to be there to be satisfactory backwards compatibility in my mind. Low resolution Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles that don't even have locked 30 FPS is not appealing to deal with for yet another generation. Princess Peach Showtime doesn't even have locked 30 FPS, but that seems like a lack of optimization.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

"Let go your earthly tether, enter the void, empty and become wind." - Guru Laghima

It really would be ridiculous if this doesn't happen but knowing Nintendo they'll charge full price for basic remasters instead and they'll sell millions. Either way we should know soon at this point.

I can see something like this:
Buy at 70$ the re-release.
Or, if you already have the 60$ game on switch, pay 20$ to upgrade,
Or, free upgrades for those who sign the switch online tier 3.

It would be nice, but not a deal breaker by any means. They could it with select titles like MS did with the Series X|S, but Nintendo isn't really known for doing that.
