Forums - Gaming Discussion - Good games that got overshadowed

Dreams released at a very weird time and with little support. I released in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima and the PS5 launch all overshadowed it. It is crazy that with Sony so eager to port their games to PC, they haven't ported Dreams which could really benefit from a PC (and PS5) port.

Modnation Racers was mishandled.

Uncharted Golden Abyss is stuck on the Vita and released only a few months after Uncharted 3.

Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends never got their proper respect.

I agree.

Rayman Origins and Legends are two of the best (if not THE best) 2D platforms out there. Too bad a lot of people just ignored them.

I enjoyed playing this game. Yes, I know it's a cheap knockoff of GTA, but it doesn't get old snuffing out Nazis.

Oh, I remembered another one: Blur, for PS3/360/PC.

It's a racing game with very beautiful visuals, and you can get weapons around the tracks to attack other oponents. Sadly, it didn't sell very well, even if it got a sequel for mobile.

Seriously, if you like racing games, and still got a 7th gen system, go try this one. A true hidden gem.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines!

Not the best idea to release the same day as Half-Life 2 as well as within the same month as World of Warcraft, Halo 2, Jak 3, Killzone, and Metal Gear Solid 3.

Shame too. Troika were goated RPG developers and the franchise is finally getting a proper sequel, but talk about a perfect storm of bad timing that ended in the studio getting shutdown.

Yeah, VtM - Bloodlines is THE example for this (though not their fault, IIRC, Troika had regrets about Valve's support and terms of licensing Source engine for VtM, being directly responsible for buggy state the game launched in).

As for proper sequel - I had high hopes for it, but from what I've seen so far, this sequel can't hold a candle to original.

I find it to be a mix between GTA and AC - and I actually find it more enjoyable than most GTAs (along with Sleeping Dogs and Red Faction: Guerrilla).

The first one, Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption, had it just as bad.

While Bloodlines released during a very busy release window, it's predecessor released at the same time as Diablo II and Deus Ex, two Juggernauts that are fondly remembered today, and Homeworld: Cataclysm and Icewind Dale, which have a very devoted fanbase, plus Age of Empires II and Baldur's Gate II releasing just a month later.

It also certainly didn't help that the season got flooded with Vampire-related games, as Dracula: Resurrection released the same day, plus Vampire Hunter D and Buffy the Vampire Slayer coming out shortly afterwards, with Dracula and Buffy much more well-known to even household names at that time, stealing quite a bit of it's thunder.

As a result, Redemption is almost forgotten apart from a core fanbase, to the point that most don't even know that Bloodlines wasn't the first one based on the Vampire: The Masquerade license.

Shadow Hearts
(No pun intendfed)

It released just a few days appart from Final Fantasy X in both Japan and America.
That has to be one of the all-time worst timings to release a Jrpg.

As a result, many (me included) never even heard of it until years later.
This series has a special place in my heart. One of them is in my Top 5, and the other in my Top 15.

So, for Christmas, I was giving all 3 of the Shadow Hearts games as a gift. New World is sealed. Hope to start playing them for the first time sometime this year (added to the backlog).

My shout, Remember Me. A good action game by the DONTNOD people. I enjoyed it and really liked the way the combat and strings were customiseable and it looked great for it's time.

A week later? The Last of Us released. :P

Hmm, pie.

Apart from Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption as explained above, I would say Dragon Quest VIII, at least initially.

I mean, many bought the game not for it's own merits, but for the Final Fantasy demo that came with it. Only afterwards was it clear to the public that the game was absolutely fantastic, but by then, it had been out for quite a while already.

True Crime: Streets of LA comes to mind. It was a great game, but everybody was just playing GTA 3 back then.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

If we're completely honest though, Redemption is nowhere as good of a game as Bloodlines.
