Apart from Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption as explained above, I would say Dragon Quest VIII, at least initially.
I mean, many bought the game not for it's own merits, but for the Final Fantasy demo that came with it. Only afterwards was it clear to the public that the game was absolutely fantastic, but by then, it had been out for quite a while already.
