Considering how the seeming difficulty has evolved and their bosses have looked and needed more insane strats, reaction times worthy of pure action games. I think it's quite clear there has been an evolution with their games since the beginning. The expansion of ER felt like a culmination of a lot of those things.

Though in the same process, if you liked something like Demon Soul's or Dark Souls 1 expressively for the more methodical/carefulness of the combat system and willingness to experience different types of challenges with actual different boss strategies needed, then it seems clear that FromSoft has pivoted for a more action-like type game including mechanics and difficulty beholded of the series and is likely not gonna go back to tight knit, more experimental phases of those older games.

They didn't even animate characters in Starfeild, something Horizon, The Witcher and especially Cybperpunk which Starfeild should be most compared to has evolved. They still stick to the same gun play for example. Same disjointed world although now it's not buildings that have loading screens but your space ship and planets. CDPR went out of their way to evolve this aspect with TW3 and make nearly all buildings open with no loading. They fell behind on the most basic of basic things while the competition outpaced them and that's why I feel FromSoft might get left behind on animations and just basic stuff. I don't mean evolving as trying something new but... ah, I can't explain, my words are failing me.

In Bethesdas case they downgraded a lot over the years to make things more accessible too, so I guess it's not a great comparison.

This is why I was saying that you could argue it either way, depending on what you focused on.

But I would also argue that most of these things don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Elden Ring is beaten by Horizon 2, The Witcher 3, in a lot of technical matters, and it didn't matter. Elden Ring objectively has a ton of technical issues, UI issues, animation deficits, tons of reused assets. Yet scored higher than either of them, and was one of the fastest selling games ever.

From Soft games have never been the ones to push technical limits. Plenty of Sony first party titles, practically look a generation ahead of From Soft. From Soft is not making anything like the animations that Naughty Dog has been for a while.

These kinds of things might matter to people like us on gaming forums, but they don't seem to matter to most people. If it was that important, Demon's Souls remake would have sold 10x what Elden Ring did, instead of the 20x (and increasing) the other way around.

FromSoft "stuck in aging mechanics"? That's a bold take when everyone else is busy copying their homework. If they really need to "evolve," they can just drop ARMORED CORE VII and remind everyone they’ve got way more than just Souls in their arsenal and flex on the entire action genre.

Well, since I posted this thread they certainly went and took a bold risk in a direction I never thought they would go. Perhaps it is for the best that they stay somewhat the same. 😆

This thread really reads like Nintendo should be careful with Mario because Square released Balan Wonderworld

They have Naughty Dog in their court now. When Studio of that quality start playing in at your game, you need to up your game.
