I'm still sad ARMS didn't get any sequels. Maybe on Switch 2.

Try the Virtual On series. Arms is a watered-down version of those. I like ARMS and hope to see a sequel.

Yeah but ARMS is about punching, Virtual On is about shooting.

What's with the lack of new IPs from Nintendo. For all of the Switch's success, one area it seems to be lacking in is launching major new 1st party IPs.

I think the biggest original 1st party IP on Switch is Ring Fit Adventure, but its appeal is based on its peripheral not really the world and characters it offers.

The others I can think of are Arms, Game Builder Garage, and Astral Chain, none of which were massive sellers.

As of late Nintendo seems to be focusing on sequels, remakes, remasters, and ports.

I was encouraged to see that Nintendo was beta testing that MMO game the other day, because at least it shows they are trying something new.

One thing I will say about Nintendo is that they often use their existing characters for spinoffs to explore new gameplay ideas, such as Princess Peach Showtime. Still this is not the same as creating a new IP from scratch.

I'm reminded about how the developers said that Splatoon started out as a Mario game before becoming its own thing. Thank goodness they decided to create a new IP out of it. Actually, Splatoon seems to be their last high profile new IP in a while.

What do you think? Should Nintendo put more money behind new IPs?

@bold-underlined. Threads self-answer.

Nah it's both melee and shooting and the ARMS in ARMS basically are shooting. It's a long range attack.

Then again one of Min Min's ARMS is a dragon that fires a laser beam. Still wish it had a sequel. Or at least give us a new Punch-Out.

Nintendo actually does seem to do better when it comes to new IPs compared to many of their competitors. For example during the Switch era, these are new Nintendo IPs:

Ring Fit Adventure, Arms, 1-2 Switch, as well as Astral Chain which is an IP Nintendo owns. Combined they sold over 20 million copies. I don't think many of their competitors launched new IPs that sold that much in the last 7 years or so.

Sure, their new IPs are very often casual leaning franchises, but still, sales count.

Compared to MS maybe.

Sony launched Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn in the last 7 years.

Horizon Zero Dawn alone sold 24.3m+.

Ghost of Tsushima sold 13m+.

You prove my point. Basically Horizon is the only new Sony IP that did better than Ring fit adventure (15 million copies sold as of yet). Meaning that Nintendo is still one of the top players when it comes to new IP Success. Compare that to their Japanese competitors like Capcom who can't create any new IP that does well for example.

Sure, if you consider Ring Fit Adventure a suitable new ip. :)

Basically, Nintendo will mostly create new casual franchises given that their core gamer franchises are incredibly popular already. So when they make a new IP they think about how they can get casuals into Nintendo consoles, because the core gamers will enjoy stuff like Zelda already.

I always read that Nintendo needs new IPs. Meanwhile, they have tons of unused IPs that are collecting dust for at least a decade or so.

While we're at it, how many new IPs did Sony and Microsoft brought to the table this gen so far? Because not many really spring into my mind right now.

Since 2017 (year Switch was released)

- Horizon

- Materfall

- Drawn to Death

- Astrobot

- Detroit Become Human

- Days Gone

- Death Stranding

- Ghost of Tsushima

- Returnal

- Rise of Ronin (is this Sony owned)

- Concord

So I think only Returnal, Rise of Ronin and Concord are new this gen. Maybe Astrobot, but I consider the first game to be Rescue Mission which was a VR game

List is missing Dreams, Destruction All Stars, and many many VR games.
