“The Game Awards” are a farce that’s generally geared toward marketing new products, the awards themselves are the less important part.
But I think the biggest issue with them is that they have the most pretentious title of any game awards - I don’t think any other is named as though they’re the only awards in existence in order to gain legitimacy. The reality, there are plenty of game awards with many on far older publications or boards - the AIAS/DICE Awards, for example, are awards from the game industry for the game industry, dating back to the 1990s where GE007 won, FF7 came in runner up, and winning other categories. The only way “THE Game Awards” could be more pretentious is adding more adjectives like “The Official Game Awards”.
