Forums - Sony Discussion - Digital Foundry - PS5pro's PSSR vs PC DLSS/FSR 3.1

TLDR:
1) DLSS is still superior in every aspect.
2) PSSR is "good enough" that it's hard to discern differences, especially in moving gameplay.

Sony needed to include more Ram with the PS5 Pro to really make better use of the memory hungry RT and PSSR.

A those gif comparisons even real?

The blur on base ps5 looks as bad as you would see in a 480p video lol

Watch this  (go like 1m50s into it and look at PS5 vs PS5pro).

I suspect your refering to the Final Fantasy 7 rebirth gifs?
Yes it runs at a very low resolution on the base PS5 for some reason (1080p vs 4k).
Stuff like Ghosting on TAA is also gone with PSSR on the PS5pro.
Stuff in the distance like trees no longer go transparent and shimmer...

Its just a massive difference in this game.
This is "Smooth performance" mode of FF7 rebirth.... vs the PS5pro mode.
Because the PS5pro is putting out 60fps, they compair it to the high fps PS5 mode.

Wow that video is insane. A PS5 game shouldn't never be built in such a lazy way to be made to look that bad, the hardware isn't that shit lol. Felt like I watched a scaled down PS4 game on Switch with blur added to hide jaggies vs the clean 1080p PS4 game.

These are zoomed in side by sides.

Final Fantasy Rebirth isn't a bad looking or dated game in terms of graphics.
Its just maybe too demanding, in scope and scale, and detail...

Here is a video of it running on a base PS5 at release:

I wouldn't call it a bad looking game.

1) DLSS isn't a option on a Xbox Series S/X or Playstation 5.
2) This is leaps and bounds better than FSR (what consoles currently use).
3) PSSR is pretty close to DLSS, on this dev kit and early version (not even out yet) of PSSR.
Sony will patch it over time, just like DLSS gets updates. A year from now, it might be even closer.
Insomiac devs have commented its already seen slight improvements, since this version thats been tested.
4) Ultimately the reason for "more ram" would be performance related, when you mention memory hungry RT.
However we know its going to do like 3-4 times the performance of base PS5 when it comes to RT.  Thats gonna be enough for this gen of console RT.
also we know its somehow able to allocate 1,5GB more ram to games than the base model does.
End of the day, its the most powerfull console this gen, only option for better RT would be to build a high end PC instead.
or wait 4 years and get a Playstation 6, or whatever a future xbox would be called.

They're zoomed in by several magnitudes

As a first attempt, I think the results are rather remarkable.

And, when ppl comment on why the need for a midgen refresh, it's because of stuff like this

Getting their first version of PSSR now is going to do wonders when PS6 matches with a 2.0 of this tech.

To me all this just shows how bad FSR is lol

In any case, I’ll just hold out until PS6. PS5 Pro is a hefty investment that’ll only last until 2028 according to insider reporting. I’ve only played three games on my PS5 this gen: TLoU:Pt1 Remaster, Astro Bot + Astro’s Playroom, Sonic Frontiers.

Checking put those new comparisons on the OP... this isn't making the PRO look good, this is making the base ps5 look like dog shit. What the actual fuck. You mean the enthusiast €800 + console is now what is necessary. Ffs. I'm set to buy a ps5 in less than a month but now.... what. You mean these games that don't look much better than on my Ps4 pro graphically look this blurry. What went wrong? Surely the ps5 hardware is more capable than that shit.... I'm actually stumped. What happened to checkerboard rendering that was producing so much better quality on PS4 pro but for the love of God if the developers can't optimise the game for the hardware why are they chasing graphics, bring the fidelity down to the point the console can handle it even if it doesn't look much better than 8th gen. Why fo I own a 4k TV if that's the image I'm getting, this was half sorted with the ps4 pro why is it such a step back....

No shit. Never said anything to the contrary making this point redundant. I am comparing technology vs technology.
DLSS > PSSR.

FSR was always garbage.

No it's not "pretty close". It's just "good enough" where it's irrelevant on a big panel TV with console level settings.

nVidia is the pioneer and market leader of deep learning super sampling, AMD, Sony and Intel are about a generation or more behind still.

And just like PSSR gets improvements... So will DLSS, PC doesn't remain static.

The lack of memory will just mean that PSSR and Ray Tracing will not be optimal, concessions will need to be made elsewhere.
And considering the catastrophic pricing of the PS5 Pro... Well. No excuse.

Ray Tracing also needs more CPU time... So that 3-4x improvement in RT is still going to be CPU bottlenecked.

The Playstation 5 Pro is a very unbalanced piece of hardware with some "smart" and more modern capabilities.

Settle down my friend.  The ps5 is a significant jump over the ps4.  Those pics are zoomed in and there is no doubt Rebirth smokes Remake in terms of fidelity and size/scope.  The ps5 is a very powerful system, you won't be disappointed.

Edit

Also Square uses their own game engines and they are hot garbage, so don't blame the hardware.  FF16 runs like crap on a $1800 rtx 4090, as an example.  At 4k + max settings the framerate drops into the 50s, which is absurd.

Edit

And I tend to agree with Pemalite, 16 gb is on the low side for total memory.  One of the reasons I think people are expecting too much from the switch 2, 12 gb isn't what it used to be.  Personally I wouldn't build a rig without 32 gb system ram and at least 16 gb dedicated vram.  Even 16 gb vram I think will be low in a couple of years.
