I does really tap into that same pacing that Galaxy 2 and 3D World has where by the time you have digested one design idea, it jumps on to another. Little to no filler. Very happy with it.

I'd put it a tier below the top 3D platformers (which is mostly just the better end of 3D Mario games) for a couple of reasons, one being a preference from a more varied core moveset instead of spreading out to area-restricted options. The other is the visual design of enemies. These are gripes in name only though, just a couple of things a sequel can take care of to make it near perfect.

I can't see it not outselling Dread. Kind of hard to say how much Dread sold exactly with Nintendo not reporting on stuff that didn't sell a million within the quarter or something but we know that it topped 3m about 1.5-2 years ago so if I am to pull numbers out of my ass, I'd say it should be about 3.5 now, 4m tops (which by the way is pretty great for both Metroid and the genre, I don't know where the NOONE BOUGHT narrative is coming from).

Yeah, that "no one bought it" narrative is a bit silly, since Metroidvania genre, at least "2D" part, is not really high selling (unlike its 3D counterpart, where there are games that have hit really high numbers).

But, there is also this thing called Hollow Knight that sold more than Metroid Dread (apparently quite a bit more), so maybe folks are just thinking "this shouldn't be happening", since Metroid is the original, and in the very name of the genre.

Reviews stopped dropping for some time now, are there any notable places still needing to review it? Only Edge that always can take a full month?

I'm really enjoying the game. there's lots interesting power-ups and mechanics and they're all used in interesting and fun ways. They also did an excellent job utilizing the Dual-sense features in this game.

It reminds me the most of the Mario Galaxy games. In fact I'd say Team Asobi just decided to make Mario Galaxy 3 in the form of Astro-bot, and it's very worthy of that title. I can see them becoming one of Sony's top studios in the future.

I had thought that this game would get high scores, but this is far beyond my expectations.

Yeah after playing Astro's Playroom I knew this game was going to be good, but I didn't expected it to be Mario Galaxy 2 levels of good. Hopefully the strong word of mouth can help it sell well.

The game is great but some things would work a lot better in VR.

There is lots of motion control stuff in the game already, yet apart from that, I miss the depth perception VR gives. 99% of my deaths are from struggling with the camera view / not being able to clearly see where I'm going to / going to land. The game would be a lot easier in VR.

It's at the extra levels (square and cross levels) where it becomes frustrating, the ones you have to complete in one go without slowing down. Crumble Rumble 3 is a pita as well due to the camera auto adjusting changing your direction of movement.

I would like to finish the game yet lately it's drumming up more anger than joy :/ Very unlike Rescue Mission which had me smiling from beginning to end. As well as Playroom. It seems to be a common curse in flat platformers (or rather 'full length' games) to use frustration to extend the game play. My wife has given up on the game, made her too frustrated.

It's a difficult balancing act. You want to provide the extra challenge for the hardcore players. Yet at the same time you're giving the less hardcore players a bad after taste, not being able to complete the game. Hence why difficulty levels / assist modes are so important.

Anyway minor criticism, I'm at 277/300, still got some void galaxy levels to complete. (And those infernal cross/square levels). Lot's of great stuff in the game and the game themed levels are amazing. (Although shooting a bow in VR is not comparable to point and click)

Anyone else agree that Astro Bot is the best non-Nintendo and non-Mario 3D platformer of all-time?
I just have a few puzzle pieces left to get and I'm saving that for later to hit a platinum milestone with Astro Bot.
Astro Bot is my favorite 2024 game that isn't a remake.

To me it's up there with 3D World and Galaxy 2 as the best 3D plaftormers I've ever played.

The next game could be a bit bigger and have a bigger moveset for Astro outside the stage powerups, but Astro Bot is already a masterpiece.

It certainly makes a great case! Only modern non-Nintendo/Mario 3D platformer that comes to mind would be It Takes Two which was certainly a special game. Only difference that brings it down a peg would be the requirement of a second player. But I think that's also what amplified the game to be GOTY worthy. I definitely agreed to It Takes Two winning GOTY.

I'm waiting to finish Astro Bot before making that declaration personally though.
