Zkuq said: I personally think the Poll of the Week is fine on the front page, but I won't be very sorry to see it go either. I think it fits there well enough on PC, but on mobile it's probably a bit much. In fact, on PC I might even consider raising it above the forum section, but maybe that's just me. |
Above the forum section?! That'd push forums down even further. Let me ask you, is your objection to removing PotW based on visibility (you want to be able to see it), functionality (you like that PotW allows voting by IP) or something else? If the objection is visibility, do you not believe the example in the OP would be enough? By marking it as important it would stay in that position all week and be highlighted in orange. |
Visibility. The poll is a visually distinct feature that also seems fairly popular, so it's a nice highlight of the community side of things here. Individual threads are easier to miss, even when marked important. I don't strongly object to making polls forum-based if they're marked important and important threads stay at the top on the front page, but it would be nice if such a visually distinct and seemingly popular feature was available on the front page. Another aspect is that clicking on a thread marks the posts as read, so clicking on a poll thread also imposes more involvement than just clicking a poll on the front page.

Dropdown? So something like this...? But try to make it look nicer obviously |
Yes, exactly this! But preferably visually a bit nicer, maybe akin to the generation selector below Consoles Hardware Sales?

I think it would be sensible to start with trying to restrict avatars to the same size on front page but I'm under the assumption it would be difficult. On VGChartz everyone has different sized avatars so on the front page I imagine you'd have to make some sort of feature that restricts avatars to a certain height/width but you'd also have to implement where the restriction starts, which ideally would be a Top-Down crop. |
You can easily define maximum dimensions for pictures on websites, so some sort of site restrictions on the front page would probably be pretty easy (unless there's surprises). Off the top of my head, I think it just stretches the picture to fit the wanted size, so if e.g. cropping is wanted instead, that might require something trickier (or not; not sure if there's ways to tell the browser how the size restriction should be imposed).
