Forums - Gaming Discussion - Modern games that feel like they belong in a earlier era

Souls series. Death has repercussions, which most older games don't have. Most games have simple check points, souls kicks you back to last bonfire and the player needs to transverse large parts of the level.

Err, what?  Old games started your butt back at the beginning of the game.  You almost can't have more repercussions than that short of a death erasing the game cartridge itself.

Should be newer, not older.  Typo.

I realize this is not a popular opinion but I don't agree. It looks nothing like an NES or SNES game. It has a sprite art style but doesn't look like a game running on those systems. It's also way too fast and floaty to me for that era. It just feels like a more modern indie game being a love letter to Mega Man but not actually being a game from the era.  Where Sonic Mania. Freedom Planet. Feels like legit Saturn games. Bloodstained Curse of the Moon looks and feels much more NES-era. Not saying it has to be able to run on that hardware to sell it. Curse can't run on NES. It sells the idea that it could. Maybe this is fine with most people but Shovel Knight plays and looks how people want to remember NES. With that said.

Sol Cresta. It feels and looks like a Japan-only Saturn shmup. Who knows maybe a universe EA publishes only in Japan like Sōkyūgurentai.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

It may be offensive to Trials of Cold steel fans but even the demo of the newest one feels ooooold.

Can't go without this one:

Xeno Crisis (Windows, PS4, XBO, Switch, Linux, MacOS)

The crazy part - all cartridges/CD ROMS:

SEGA Mega Drive, SNES, NEOGEO (AES,MVS, CD), Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS Vita, GBA

I recently cleared The Evil Within from my backlog and it feels like a 6th/7th generation game in all the bad ways.

The Pokemon games on Switch, the visuals and gameplay all scream outdated.

Well it's already quite old since it releases much earlier in Japan. I loved the Cold Steel Saga, but since then it just hasn't evolved that much. The series needed a reboot when it went to Calvard, both gameplay and visuals.
