Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Best year of a Nintendo system prior to Switch's 2017

Switch's first year is iconic in how many big games it managed to squeeze into just 10 months, getting the system off to a flying start and giving owners of Nintendo's new owners a bunch of awesome experiences to sink our teeth into.

Prior to the arrival of the Switch though, which do you feel was the best single year a Nintendo system has had in terms of games? Note that this is for a single system, so not like "1996 cos of SNES + N64 +Gameboy".

What's your pick, and why?

2007 for Wii: You have Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and other titles.
If we're going by North American release dates, it would have to be 2013 for 3DS. Fire Emblem: Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and some other titles.
So, it depends on what your rules are since you didn't specify original release year only.
Honorable mentions:
2001-2004 for GameCube
2010 for Wii

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 48 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Off the top of my head I think 1994 SNES. 2010 Wii would absolutely be up there if you include Xenoblade Chronicles, but it technically launched in 2012 in my region.

For 1994 on SNES, you have two of the best games ever made in Super Metroid and Final Fantasy VI, plus Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, Super Punch-Out!!, Demon’s Crest, Super Street Fighter II, etc.

2014 was pretty good for the Wii U.

Meme Run gave me 40 to 50 hours of play time.

How to Train your dragon 2 30 to 40 hours.

Donkey Kong tropical freeze.

Bayonetta 1 and 2.

The Fall.

Trying to see when The Letter came out was pretty decent year for Wii U.

You can count games according to when they released in your region if you want.

Going by global releases, then probably the NES in 1988:

Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario Bros 2 (US)
Mega Man 2
Bionic Commando
Ninja Gaiden
RC Pro Am
Ice Hockey

The SNES in ‘94 would be a pretty strong second though.

2006 for a calendar year - even if just for the launch of the DS Lite and Wii alone and the combined excitement Nintendo fans had. I know this is for single systems, but it’s difficult to separate those two, they went for the sleek, innovative, and intuitive approach. It really was a Renaissance for Nintendo, and I don’t think any year has topped it since. I find it hard to split the two since I was a big fan of them both - by the Gamecube era I was probably 40% a handheld fan and 60% a classic games (mainly SNES and Mario Kart 64) fan when it came to Nintendo. But the Wii and DS Lite blew that to pieces. It was the modernization of a Nintendo that had been dying since the launch window of the N64. As I said, it’s difficult to separate the two, my memories of that period are extremely positive for Nintendo’s reawakening, no matter which system I look at. The DS Lite felt like the biggest turning point for Nintendo, but I think the release of the Wii solidified it, and a lot of the excitement and confidence in the Wii at launch surrounded how well the DS Lite went. Both DS Lite and Wii were two very product focused launches, rather than the old “here’s some hardware… it’s kinda like everything else on the market… this is more powerful and plays new versions of the games you’ve played before… except weird and designed for people a lot younger than you… our most attractive is that if your hands are tiny, the controller is VERY comfortable…”

If we’re talking a year that amounts to any span of time, so long as it’s a consecutive year, then the launch of the Wii at the end of 2006 until the release of Super Mario Galaxy can’t be rivalled… except by the first calendar year of the Switch.

I’m very much looking forward to the Switch 2 launch year potentially beating both of these. We’ll see.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I'll also pay tribute to my personal favorite: 1998 on N64. A lot of these games are not only great, but they mean a lot to me on a personal level.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
  • F-Zero X
  • 1080 Snowboarding
  • Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
  • WCW/nWo Revenge
  • Body Harvest
  • Fighters Destiny
  • BattleTanx
  • Wipeout 64

Proud to say I still own physical copies of them all :)

I would say 1998. Not only did you have classics like Veknoid_Outcast mentioned, but I'm going to cheat a little and throw in Pokémon Red and Blue releasing in the US that same year

The SNES in 1994

Breath of Fire II, Donkey Kong Country, Earthbound, Earthworm Jim, Final Fantasy VI, Fire Emblem 3, Ken Griffey Jr, Mortal Kombat II, NBA Jam, Shin Megami Tensei II, Super Bonk, Super Metroid, Super Street Fighter II... I had to put these in alphabetical order so I wouldn't lose track of which games I had typed.
