Best year of a Nintendo system prior to Switch's 2017

Switch's first year is iconic in how many big games it managed to squeeze into just 10 months, getting the system off to a flying start and giving owners of Nintendo's new owners a bunch of awesome experiences to sink our teeth into.

Prior to the arrival of the Switch though, which do you feel was the best single year a Nintendo system has had in terms of games? Note that this is for a single system, so not like "1996 cos of SNES + N64 +Gameboy".
