Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can graphics keep evolving? How? For how long?

graphics have still got plenty of room to evolve.

Right now all we've seen focus on are character models, all while background detail is still not as detailed as the character models themselves, as well as LoD visuals still having something left to be desired.

Give it another decade and we'll hopefully have more focus put into those respective areas of visuals,, and maybe even a focus on amped up, realistic/interactive physics (which I feel gets the short end of the stick these days).

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

Graphics will probably keep improving forever, or at least until there's nothing left to improve. The process is fairly simple as long as we don't hit the limits of physics, after which it will probably be a matter of optimization, which will enable even better graphics. After all, the limiting factor right now isn't whether we know how to render realistic graphics, it's about how performant rendering is.

In theory, they can keep evolving until they are indistinguishable from reality. But in practice, I don't know what good that would do, other than VR purposes. Most people play games to escape reality, not to continue it. So I think we've probably already hit a ceiling there. The push for 1:1 realistic graphics will continue for certain applications, and the Atari-SNES style will likely win out for everything else. Then you'll just choose which road you wanna be on.

Graphics will always improve but we are at a point where it's not immediately noticeable anymore. Most games this gen barely look marginally better than the last gen at a glance. For people that aren't as into gaming as us they probably wouldn't even be able to tell a difference

Depends on which consoles you are talking about. If it's ps4 and especially xbox the difference is pretty clear on depending on how close you play and screen size.

I thought Rift, Demon and many other ps5 games immediately a large jump over the ps4. This gen has stunning games.

When I was in school in 2000, I read in a magazine that the next Nintendo console after the N64 was coming out soon, and my child's brain went "but how can games look even better than Banjo Kazooie?"
It always feels like we're near the peak, but humans are nothing if not inventive and I'm sure we'll find new ways to amaze and innovate for a long time to come.

It's not even just about pushing the cutting edge either; because mobile technology necessarily lags behind desktop and home consoles, there's still a lot of ground to cover in the portable space. We haven't yet seen for example what Nintendo and their partners will be able to do with a hardware a generation beyond the ageing Switch.

Not sure what the switch 2 has to do with evolving graphics. sure Nintendo games will look nice but it really has nothing to do with the topic, this is more about ps6 or Xbox next.

I made a new friend at my job, and he's also a gamer. Yesterday we were enjoying some free time, talking about our gaming life. We ended up talking about how graphics evolved since the early video game days.

Then, at some point, he said: "Bro, I think Unreal Engine 5 is probably the peak for graphics. I mean, it can't get much better than that. Gaming will probably evole on gameplay and more realistic mechanics, but I think the visuals are very close to the limit"

I told him that at PS3/360 days we had the same feeling. He agreed, but also stated that the graphics at PS5/XSX are realistic enough so it doesn't actually need to evolve more than that.

Do you agree with him?

I agree with him.

We are not going to see any significant graphical increase in games anymore. Some genres peaked on ps3 with photo realism and them others followed on PS4. PS5 has a huge graphical upgrade and a lot of characters are looking more like CGI with more polygons than ever before.

Check this Game  Flip Runner

Dreamcast felt peak when it came out. Shenmue! Holy shit. Characters look realistic. Lip sync! Hands have individual fingers and veins! Mirror reflections!  Random weather! I can interact with anything! Open any drawer! Flip every light switch. Take pictures off the wall. Pick up fruit or other individual objects. Sports games had mesh in the jerseys on Dreamcast. The basketball court had reflections.

In 1999 it didn't seem it could get better. Now DC and Shenmue look quaint.
