Nier, Watch Dogs, and Evil Within were on PS3/360 too.

And IPs like Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc absolutely didn't play it safe; they didn't copy what was already popular, they forged their own style and identity.

The 8th gen did have some cool new IPs too; I did quite enjoy Splatoon, Hellblade, and Ori, but the 7th gen definitely had more standouts.

I was talking about nier automata, and watch dogs and evil with were designed for 8th gen, as the 360/ps3 version are really butchered version of the games that take away from the experience.

As for Bioshock and mass effect they were still in a very popular genre at the time everyone was making thirdperson shoulder shooters and FPS sure they had their own twist and elements  but they weren't anything risky for example hack and slash were a genre that was dying on 360/ps3. I don't even recall one hack and slash doing really great sales wise except DMC 4 and GOW3 did did like 3 and 5 million each.

Automata wasn't a new IP; the original Nier game was a 7th gen IP. And as Mar1217 says, lesser graphics doesn't change the fact that those IP debuted on PS3/360. I actually played Evil Within on 360 and found it to be a good experience.

And being an FPS or TPS alone doesn't guarantee success; in fact the more crowded the market the harder it is to stand out and beat the competition. And there were plenty of 7th gen new IPs that were not FPS/TPS; Bayonetta, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Assassin's Creed, Souls, Wii Sports, Nier, Motorstorm, Puppeteer, etc.

Evil within was a 27-30fps on ps4 on 360 it was solid 20fps.

All those games mentioned were very small  budgets and hardly even big hits, 8th gen changed that with God of War and fromsoftware games.

Almost none of those games were low budget relative to their platform, and stuff like Assassin's Creed, Wii Sports, and Souls were huge hits. And in any case neither sales nor budget changes the fact that they were significant new IPs.

For that matter, to add to the original list, throw in The Last of Us, Left 4 Dead, Dishonoured, Borderlands, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Lost Odyssey, No More Heroes, Bulletstorm, Dragon Age...

People are blinded. There has never been a time in gaming (even with the shitty aspects) than right now and that makes 8th gen the better gen simply because it's newer, instead People see through rose tented glasses what's essentially inferior. This reminds me of people who keep saying there are no games to play, ffs like, there literally has never been more new games to play, the problem is there are TOO many new games.

Dude, don't do that. It's disrespectful. You can make a case for your favorite thing without impugning the opposite side's ability to think clearly and rationally. People have different preferences and priorities; that's what makes this forum so interesting.

Aye, you're indeed right and ya can't change minds on something like this either.

I understand where you are coming from. I feel the same way as well, i feel like there's way more are choices for everyone now. These preferences are so subjective that it really doesn't matter in the end. There are many people that just like to play games on easy mode and not get a challenge or wanna use their  brain and just see the story while enjoying the beautiful world i think that's not what makes a good game but in the end it's their preference.

all you have to do is look at games sales and compare and see how much quality games are selling compared to 7th gen.

I would disagree with the notion that newer inherently means better.

By that logic, every modern game would be better than every old game, yet I'd contend that something like Super Mario World, Metroid Prime, or RE4 2005 wipes the floor with the majority of modern games.

There are valid reasons for someone to prefer the 7th gen over the 8th; perhaps the new IPs of the 7th resonated with them more, perhaps their favourite developers or franchises were better in the 7th, perhaps they strongly dislike certain trends that were popular in the 8th, etc.

Well for Japanese games 8th gen and 7th gen had a bias against Japan and Japan tried to appeal to the West and we got a lot of bad reboots trying to be more Western. JRPGs got smaller in budget and mostly suffered. The 8th gen saw the return of Japan in JRPGs. Action games and more just in general being amazing. Better budgets and viewed better.  Not that the 7th gen didn't have amazing stuff from Japan. After all VanQuish, Xenolade, AC4A, MGR.Bayonetta and hundreds more.

The 7th gen is also a better era for the TPS thanks to gears and trend chasers. Sure most clones were average to bad. Still got Fall of Cybertron. VanQuish. Binary Domain. EX Troopers and a few other great ones. AAA western games?  7th gen. More of them were complete and on a disc, I can play offline. 8th gen and beyond more and more stuff chasing gaas trends. 7th gen had more of the B game. Which I like to find some solid B games. That sorta died in 8th gen as budgets ballooned. 9th gen we have seen some of those return like Evil West. Soulstice. GunGrave Gore and a few more from the last few years.

Nintendo tho. Despite Wii/DS's success and some great stuff on those machines. Give me Switch any day. From the library to easier to just pick up and play withut funky setups with sensor bars or funky controls like a stylus or Wii remote.
