I dont know much about this perticular case, but it seems like a bit of a slippery slope. If you hurt someone physically or mentally torment them with racist remarks, then of course you should go to jail. But if just saying racist stuff is criminal, then jails would be full of mentally ill homeless people arrested for screaming racist remarks while under the influence of whatever. Also who decides what is and what isnt racist? The judge, a jury, the police, politicians or maybe a mix of all four? If progressives get a hold of that law, then comedians like Russel Peters would get life in prison.
I feel like in order for something to be racist, it needs to have ill intentions. But not everybody feels that way. So again, who decides what is considered racist?

A judge, based on what's written in a law/constitution about the topic, as anything else. If you do not agree with the decision, you can try another decision twice more with different judges.
Another example from my country:
Brazil Sentences Woman to Eight Years For Racist Speech

Brazil has always had the reputation for being really good with regards to acceptance of various races and colors. I'm really surprised that your nation would feel the need to implement a law with such a harsh punishment. That woman isn't going to be able to see her family. A kid just lost their mother for almost a decade for some smack their mom talked.
Last edited by shavenferret - on 30 December 20248 years is insane but this is a merky area, I'm all for free speech but hate speech, especially continued and not a once off is not on. Still, 8 years is pretty insane, that's not rehabilitation time, that's hey everyone else, look at this and don't be racist time. I don't agree with making examples of people, it is unfairness and law should always be fair.
She's pretty. I'd wife her and forgive every crazy thing out of her mouth. When *people* don't get the certain ***kinds of attention*** that they deserve, they go crazy lol. Had to edit that so won't look sexist, b/c i'm on thin ice for a while.

People of various races and colors can feel accepeted here not because of the brazillian people but because of the laws we have. Relying only on people for feeling accepted or not is flawed. Even if we are acceptive (a little bit debetable statement), there will be always people who aren't, and general acceptance may change throught the years.
And as for the case I brought, you forgot the part where no more black people will deal with racist rants coming out of her in the next 8 years, especially the little girl she was attacking. I sympathize more with them rather than this racist woman. Racism is a crime here, and, as with any other crime, the criminal must go to jail, wheter this person has kids or not. But, I don't know if you read the full article, there it states "Even though the country has taken a stand against her, McCarthy, who lives in Paris currently, told the Post she has no plans to turn herself in to Brazilian authorities. Instead, she hopes to continue living in Europe". So don't worry about her, she will probably still be free. Free to be racist for more years to come, living her life with her supposedly existing kid, I must add
And it's not like black people live in heaven because of this law (well, compared to other coutries, it might be). Justice is slow (it took like years for the woman in the article I brought to get that sentence), can be expensive and, and although this law beautifully tackles more subtles cases of racism such as discrimination in company hiring, access to stores other establishments, I think that in cases like these, it usually ends up being less punitive in the end (fines instead of prison. In the law it states 2 to 5 years of prison, from that you can see how prejudiced the woman from the article was, she probably got the maximum penalty (5 years) and incorred in more tyés of crimes)

Yeah, she'll be going to Europe. And her husband (which i assume must be white) will have his hands full with her keeping her calm as they breed away the color that she hates. lol
Anyway, you'd be happy to know that your culture's influence is thriving among many others in the United States. We have these newer Brazillian steakhouses, which are a thing since the last 15 years or so. We also see videos on tv of the Carival celebration, looks quite festive.
I just saw some clips of Nick Kroll roasting James Franco and in it he mentions jokes about Jews controlling the media. Now, Nick Kroll is jewish as a barmitzvah in Israel. He gets all the room in the world to make jokes about jews. And i think he has a point, kind of. These nazis and whoever else are just hateful over the jews because the jews are successful and intelligent. They make the rest of the world look simple minded to the point that the world hates the jews. So, Jews, please keep jewing, you don't have to apologize to anyone.
As to my point, if comedians had limits, then this kind of talk would be outlawed. Comedy has so much room to show how a society fails, by making a joke out of it. And it does this very well. The namby pamby liberals that only watch the disney channel, who cannot take a joke will never get this.
