Forums - Sales Discussion - February Circana (NPD) 2024 Thread + Predictions

February 2024 Circana (NPD) covers the four week period from February 4 to March 2 and will be released on March 21.

Since Circana (NPD) leaks don't happen nearly as often as it used to and hardware revenue is something we do get, be sure to include revenue in your predictions.

Feel free to also predict what you think the top software games will be for the month.

Example prediction:

[Total Hardware Revenue]

  1. [#1 selling console] XXX,000
  2. [#2 selling console] XXX,000
  3. [#3 selling console] XXX,000

VGChartz February 2023 estimates:

  1. PS5 - 583K
  2. NS - 304K
  3. XSX|S - 238K

TLDR:

Units: PS5 > NS > XS
Revenue: PS5 > XS > NS

All 3 consoles revenue down 19% or more, while Xbox Series X|S confirmed to be the one down 19%. PS5 and Switch down over 19%.

PS5 Best-Selling Console in the US in February, Helldivers 2 Best-Selling Game

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the US in February 2024 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four week period of February 4 to March 2.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition had its highest unit share total ever in February, counting for a little over a third of all PS5 sales. The Digital Edition started becoming more widely available in December 2023.

The Nintendo Switch was second best-selling console in terms of units sold, however, it ranked third in terms of dollar sales. This does mean the Xbox Series X|S came in third in terms of units sold, but came in second in terms of dollar sales.

All three consoles dropped by a minimum of 19 percent in terms of revenue with the Xbox Series X|S confirmed as the console to drop the least and was the "best performer relative to other platforms."

Overall spending on video games in February was up two percent year-on-year from $4.64 billion to $4.71 billion. Spending on video game content increased five percent from $3.96 billion to $4.15 billion, while video game hardware sales was down 30 percent from $498 million to $349 million. Spending on accessories increased 25 percent from $175 million to $219 million.

"Projected U.S. total spending on video game hardware, content and accessories grew 2% in Feb vs YA, to $4.7B," said Circana Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst Mat Piscatella. "17% growth in Mobile content spending vs YA helped offset a 30% drop in hardware."

Piscatella added, "To go along with the growth in Mobile, February 2024 consumer spending in the PC, Cloud and Non-Console VR content segment increased by a high single-digit percentage when compared to a year ago, while both the Console as well as the Subscription content segments declined."

The PlayStation Portal was the best-selling Accessory of February in terms of dollar sales, while the PS5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller is the best-selling accessory of 2024.

Helldiver 2 debuted as the best-selling game of February 2024 and is already the best-selling game of 2024. Launch month dollar sales for the game are the seventh highest ever achieved for a game published by Sony in the US. Nearly 60 percent of sales came from the Steam version.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth debuted in second place and is the fourth best-selling game of 2024. The Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth Twin Pack debuted in eighth place and 16th place for the year.

Skull and Bones debuted in fourth place and is the ninth best-selling game of 2024. Mario vs. Donkey Kong debuted in 11th place, however, it should be noted this does not include digital sales.

Fortnite was number one on the monthly active users charts on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Call of Duty HQ came in second on both platforms.

Dead Island 2 after releasing on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in February without an announcement jumped from the 121st most played game on Xbox Series X|S in January to eighth in February.

After the UK and Europe results, I'm really curious to see Xbox's numbers. The whole media (and a segment of the Xbox fanbase) have been pretty adamant that the news of Xbox going 3rd party would somehow not hurt hardware sales, and I'm eager to see if they were right about this.

Revenue: 375m

[PS5] 450k
[NS] 250k
[XBS] 200k

Xbox would have declined regardless due to Microsoft's PC policy that had already rendered Xbox semi-obsolete. I don't think it has anything to do yet with their PS5/Switch support. There will of course be some damage from that, but I think it'll be more gradual than immediate.

PC is destroying Xbox and hurting Playstation hardware sales. So much that even if Xbox hypothetically exists console hardware, Playstation could very well still decline.

Except this happened last month:

"The Xbox Series X|S is the only console to see growth year-over-year with sales up in the double-digit percentage range."

Let's see how much things have changed for this month.

But many other factors go into this. Not sure what caused it to increase YoY last month, perhaps PS5 being suddenly available in large quantities in January 2023 contributed to weak Xbox sales then. And February 2023 had Hogwarts Legacy releasing, which means a Feb YoY decline was highly probable regardless of what MS did.

And this happened on December, which means we have actually seen growth YoY for the last two months, so I really have no idea how you got to the conclusion that "Xbox would have declined regardless" this month.

Xbox had been declining YoY for the majority of months last year. It's easy to nitpick certain regions/months to make it seem that Xbox wasn't in decline, but overall it clearly was. And I already explained that this February's decline, in the UK/EU especially, can be attributed to Hogwarts Legacy, 2023's biggest game. Another factor is Helldivers 2 and to a smaller extent FF7Rebirth putting the spotlight on Playstation.

That is if we look at buyers as random NPCs that just go into the store and buy whatever is "in the spotlight" at the moment, but that is not how humans work. Most people buying a PS5 today are people upgrading from PS4, and most people buying Xbox Series today are people upgrading from Xbox One; and somehow I'm having a hard time picturing an Xbox One owner thinking "Oh, Helldiver and FF7 are in the spotlight right now, let me go with PS5 this time around" No, but I can totally see an X1 owner thinking "Hmm.. seems like Microsoft is going to port all their games to PS5 eventually, maybe it will be better to get a PS5 and I will be able to play all the games there"

Btw, funny how you think that Microsoft putting their games on PC hurt Xbox's sales so bad, but somehow putting them on Playstation is not going to hurt it.

Me moments ago:

"PC is destroying Xbox and hurting Playstation hardware sales. So much that even if Xbox hypothetically exists console hardware, Playstation could very well still decline."

Why did you skip this? lol.

PC keeps growing and is clearly eating into the console market. Series XS has been trending below Xbox One before any talks about going multiplatform. And Playstation hardware, as I said countless times before, is being affected also. But growth in first party and the weaker direct competition are offsetting the damage.

In short, PC is hurting both consoles, but Xbox is more affected for rather obvious reasons.

Edit: I was an idiot and misread your comment, sorry!
