...You mean like a Nintendo 64? Xbox 360?

Uh... yeah? Wasn't the whole point of a Hybrid is having a full experience of a home console and a handheld on the same device? So, there you have it. Two features that you won't find in any of these devices that you listed or any handheld. Making the Switch a different product

Hasn't this conversation derailed enough this thread already?

So the Xbox 360 and Nintendo 64 are hybrid devices going by your definition?

Keep in mind that Local Multiplayer on a single device has existed across all platforms irrespective of form factor.

Calling a phone and a tablet just as much as a hybrid as a Switch is stupid. Just cause you technically could connect them to a TV doesn't make it valid to say its a hybrid equivalent to the Switch. The Switch is far more seemless in connecting to a TV and comes with a dock and remotes that make playing on the TV still the definitive experience of the Switch. Nobody views a phone connecting to the TV a definitive experience to the slightest, or as seemless to really consider it being close to the Switch at all. It's far less seemless, doesn't include controls that make using a phone on a TV as a primary focused feature.

Anyone who owned a Nokia Lumia/Microsoft Lumia with Microsoft Continuum understands that "Docking" and "outputting" to an external display is *exactly* the same as how the Switch operates.

Are those phones Hybrids?

And yes. They include controls.

My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has an S-Pen which has "Gesture" controls thanks to a built in Gyroscope.
My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has voice control.

Is my Samsung Galaxyt S23 Ultra a hybrid? If not? Why not? It has a dock, it has a built in input device that I can separate from the main unit.

And if you still class my S23 Ultra as "Just a Phone" despite having technically the same "features" as the Nintendo Switch, then the Switch is "Just a tablet".

This portable AMD Threadripper Desktop PC wants a word with you for being left out.

Still a Desktop though. ;)

I think the Switch 2 can do even better. Most of you forget that the Switch is a combination of Nintendo's Handheld and Console lines. It selling 150M or even 160M is poor given that almost 250M people bought Nintendo consoles in the Wii and DS era.

What would Nintendo need to sell more consoles is a very difficult question, but I am sure they are asking themselves that exact question, as they are a business and are always looking for ways to increase their bottom line. I believe Nintendo mentioned that they are building studios rather than buying them. What would they need to increase their marketshare? They need to attract more people. How do they do that? By releasing hardware features and games that attract all crowds without scaring others away.

I don't know how they will do this, but one thing we know for sure, they will make their next console have everything the Switch had, all the while trying to have some parity with the other consoles out there, with some technological magic. We know about DLSS and that Nintendo will be aggressive with its hardware next gen. Will they be able to have games like Final Fantasy on their next console, something tells me they are heading for that.

And so, the chances of them building on their current success and then going for more audiences look always greater as more information appears. And it's their history that proves that as well. Time will tell, I am betting for a slightly better sales performance as Nintendo refines its new direction.

To be able to play all types of games on the go remains a big feature for the device family.

It's unlikely considering that the Switch will be among the best-selling consoles, if not the best-selling console ever. And without any concrete information about the Switch's successor, It's downright impossible to make any real educated guess. So in other words, I'll withhold judgement until I know more about the system.

Hmmm, sorry to butt in but this looks like an interesting conversation.
So Permalite you say the Switch, phones, tablets, and laptops aren't hybrid devices. And zorg1000 says that the Switch is a hybrid?
Permalite, I think that your definition of a hybrid isn't clear concise and direct. This is how I would describe a hybrid device: "Hybrid technology systems combine two or more technologies with the aim to achieve efficient systems."
Can we all agree that this is a solid definition to use for hybrid devices?

Now we can ask if the Nintendo switch combine two or more technologies to become a more efficient device?
-Switch is a tablet that has a form of bluetooth to connect with controllers, plays games, and connects to an external device to bring it to a bigger screen (usually a TV).
-Switch allows gaming at home, and gaming-on-the-go.
Given this, we can make the deduction that, yes Nintendo Switch is a Hybrid for it has multiple ways to use it, handheld tv tabletop, and uses multiple technologies to allow gaming to be efficient.

Does the switch have a physical change when their usage changes? No, at least to me and the definition I provided, that isn't what makes a hybrid and hybrid.

May I ask what your definition of a hybrid device is?

It's a portable/handheld first and foremost.
It has a display, battery, wifi in a convenient portable form factor.

It just has "features" that allows it to do a few extra tricks/gimmicks. - Doesn't make it a Hybrid.

Is the Steamdeck a Hybrid?
Is the Aya Neo a Hybrid?
Is the ROG ally a Hybrid?
Is the PSP a Hybrid?
Is the Sega Nomad a Hybrid?
Is the iPhone 15 a Hybrid?
Is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Hybrid?
Is the iPad a Hybrid?
Is the Samsung Galaxy Tab a Hybrid?

I could go on. - They could all "Output" to an external display just like the Switch, most even have docks, some could also do it wirelessly.

So what feature specifically do -you- think makes the Switch a Hybrid?
Because it's certainly not the capability to output to a display or dock.

I will be sticking with the definition of a hybrid system.

"Hybrid technology systems combine two or more technologies with the aim to achieve efficient systems."

Alright. Now what technology is in the Switch console, im using basic common words, for I dont want to dive into specific specs (its too late).
Switch:
-A Screen
-Touch Screen Technology
-Detachable Controlers
-Inside shoulder buttons
-Trigger shoulder buttons
-D-Pad
-Cartridges
-A Dock
-Charging Dock USB-C
-Rumble
-Wireless Controller Connection
-Wi-Fi multiplayer gaming (even if it is a rather garbage connection
-Rechargeable Battery
-SD card

Now lets take a look at one of your examples: the iPhone 15 (I personally am disappointed in Apple for being lackluster in technology, they used to be the top innovators)
iPhone 15:
-A Screen
-Touch Screen Technology
-Camera
-Instantaneous Text Voice Communication
-Cell Phone
-Wi-Fi Multiplayer gaming
-Rechargeable Battery
-FaceTime
-Video Recording
-USB-C Charger.

So yes iPhone 15, and Nintendo Switch are hybrids. I can go on and on. I'll make one more comparison.
Casio F91W-1 Wrist Watch:
-Tells Time
-Tells the Day
-Wearable
-Adjustable Wrist Strap
-Belt Buckle
-Set Alarms
-Timer
(each of those require, gears, springs, motherboard circuitry, plastics, and metal)

So yes, even a watch is a hybrid.

I can't believe that this is what this thread has turned into. Take this hybrid vs non-hybrid debate to its own thread. It has literally nothing to do with the thread title. I know we're hard up for conversation here and topics, but can't we keep some of the decency of forum etiquette?

Also please I fully agree. I am sorry Super_Etecoon for our childish behavior.
May I ask what would Nintendo need to accomplish in order to sell their next console faster, quicker, expand their reach to even more people, and sell for a longer life cycle? I do appreciate you bringing us back to the thread. :)

Well why don't you base your educated guess off of the rumors (for when you withhold, you are no longer adding to the conversation).

I certainly made a guess based on rumors, and what did you think? Am I wrong? Why?

Yes! Nintendo had 250M sales in their 7th generation. It is rather sad Switch is ONLY pulling +133M as of Oct 31, 2023.

Nintendo will be using movies to promote their consoles. We have the Mario Movie being the #2 most selling movie of 2023, the #2 most selling animated movie of all time (Lion King was a Live Action according to the directors and producers), and #1 best selling video game movie. Next movie is a Live Action Legend of Zelda with Sony.

This next generation of Nintendo Console will be the biggest leap in technology a video game company will make.
The third party support will be greater than what the Switch got, and the games will actually run smooth.
All signs point to the NG selling equal if not better than the Switch.

*sigh*

Now, to compensate my derailing, here is my wild and totally ignorant guess:

Nintendo will fix all the problems that had with Switch and make the most desirable hybrid console out of it, plus their growth in software development and brand presence will help to get the system to the masses, possibly matching or surpassing the Switch.

With all that said, we are also probably looking for another software killer, comparable to what the sports/fit franchise did to wii

Lion King is an animation. Can't be a LA if not actor was filmed

Regarding producers, the movie got nominations for animation-related categories in award shows and such, which obviously need producers to submit it for animation prizes

I won't progress further because this is not the thread for it, so feel free to ignore this post
