Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Game Awards: GOTY biggest snubs

Which game got the biggest snub for GOTY at TGA?

Cocoon 9 1.62%

Dead Space Remake 17 3.07%

Diablo IV 21 3.79%

Final Fantasy XVI 149 26.90%

Hi-Fi Rush 57 10.29%

Hogwarts Legacy 126 22.74%

Starfield 90 16.25%

Street Fighter VI 42 7.58%

The Talo Principle 2 12 2.17%

Other: state in thread 31 5.60%

Total:554

I'm Ok with the list. Maybe I would add Street Fighter VI or Final Fantasy XVI, but not sure what to remove.

Well, I would be very happy if Alan Wake II somehow get the award. It won't, probably Baldur's Gate 3 will take it, but I'm glad it's at least on the list.

The nominees are fine. There were some very good games this year but very few runaways.

Mario Wonder is absolutely GOTY material, it's one of the most creative games out there and its polished to a diamod sheen.
Pleasantly surprised to see it nominated not just for GOTY but also game direction and art direction; typically the VGAs snob platformers.

I finished Wonder a couple weeks ago and find it overall overrated.  I think it is a fine game but not the quality reviews would suggest.  I was particularly disappointed in the lack of variety in boss fights.

There are 3 things wrong with TGA's GotY system:

1. There are always 5 nominees per category regardless of the amount of good games that should be in that category (with the exception of 4 out of the 31 categories, in which there are 6 nominees).

2. Half of the awards are silly and pretentious. There is best community support, best innovation in Accessibility, best game for impact, best content creator of the year, best esports this and esports that (Best esports 'Athlete' lol). But they don't have best horror game of the year (despite being a really good year for horror games) or best shooter of the year, best platformer of the year, etc.

3. They rely on Metacritic because they don't play games and don't care by the way they handle things. Then they suddenly choose not to rely on Metacritic if they believe the game is not popular enough despite the awards being BEST game of the year, and not about being most popular game of the year.

and I may have missed a few more fundamentals that lead up to their GotY awards being flaccid despite the amount of great games this year, but can't think of any more atm.
Also, I wish they had a category for worst games of the year. Golem, Rise of Kong, Stray Souls, etc. This would have been entertaining. I'd vote for Rise of Kong XD.

I finished it a couple of weeks ago too and I'd disagree, I found it an incredible game, one of Nintendo's best of the Switch generation, which I don't say lightly as I hold the likes of BOTW, TOTK, Mario Odyssey and Metroid Dread in very high regard.

Many good games will be built around one clever idea. Mario Wonder packs literally dozens of them. The ability to inspire the imagination is a rare and precious thing, and Wonder has it in spades.

Fair enough.  I enjoyed Wonder but for me it wasn't zelda, dread nor Odyssey.  I was very disappointed in the boss fights, except the final which was excellent.  I would have liked to see more creativity in the other boss fights.

1) is not a problem. Awards need a fixed number of nominations to avoid controversies about boycotting and/or favoring something. Grammy and academy awards have a fixed number of nominees every year. I believe this is the standard for any award. Changes in the nominees list rules always needs to be announced before the eligibility period as well

3) I don't think they rely on Metacritic, more likely they are the ones who written articles for Metacritic, this is an important distinction

I think the real problem with game awards is because it's an award given by journalists. Ideally awards should always be given by people who have professional working experience in the industry. For example, best voice acting should be given by... well voice actors. Best OST should be given by musicians. Best art direction by designers, and the list goes on

But gaming industry is not old enough for that and people would just vote for the games in the company they work for, or simply vote for past coworkers. Grammy for instance if an award full of Lobby because producers and labels always vote for their artists.

That's said I'm REALLY curious to see how an award given by developers would look like. Many journalists and general public darlings alike would be snubbed, that's for sure

Resident Evil 4. Good game, but I don't think remakes deserve to get GOTY nominations, there should be a separate award category each year for best remake/remaster.

RE4 Remake is fundamentally more different than RE4 than TOTK/SM2 are to their predecessors, though.

It's not like it's just a remaster or a re-release.

I personally thought Hi-Fi Rush was more deserving than RE4R. RE4R was fantastic for sure and is still in my top 5 games for the year, but I didn't get the same new feeling the way RE2R did to where I felt it definitely deserved a GOTY nom.

Hi-Fi Rush had funny and even emotional writing, memorable characters, addicting combat, and a killer soundtrack that made for one of the most unique and fun gaming experiences I've had in a long time!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

The fact that Hogwarts got zero nominations shows what a joke this show is.
