There are 3 things wrong with TGA's GotY system:
1. There are always 5 nominees per category regardless of the amount of good games that should be in that category (with the exception of 4 out of the 31 categories, in which there are 6 nominees).
2. Half of the awards are silly and pretentious. There is best community support, best innovation in Accessibility, best game for impact, best content creator of the year, best esports this and esports that (Best esports 'Athlete' lol). But they don't have best horror game of the year (despite being a really good year for horror games) or best shooter of the year, best platformer of the year, etc.
3. They rely on Metacritic because they don't play games and don't care by the way they handle things. Then they suddenly choose not to rely on Metacritic if they believe the game is not popular enough despite the awards being BEST game of the year, and not about being most popular game of the year.
and I may have missed a few more fundamentals that lead up to their GotY awards being flaccid despite the amount of great games this year, but can't think of any more atm.
Also, I wish they had a category for worst games of the year. Golem, Rise of Kong, Stray Souls, etc. This would have been entertaining. I'd vote for Rise of Kong XD.
