UnderwaterFunktown overtook S.Peelman with now 4 guesses. Darashiva and Machina are still in the lead. See here.

Let's add some hints for the unguessed games:

#20: Baldur's Gate as guessed by Darashiva.

#19:
The game has some innovative ideas, mainly it tries it's hand at procedural story generation and character growth, meaning each playthrough is different.
First the Age of Ulstryx.

#18:
Our boy needs a 100-year nap after losing a fight and the girl has to hold the fort for the time.

#17:
20 minute survivors.

#16:
"Sorry to keep you waiting!" ... does a simple sorry cut it, if the wait was 26 or 21 years (depending on the region)?

18: Breath of the Wild?

17: Was the cycle in Outer Wilds 20 minutes? I'll guess that.

One of the craziest, trippiest, most visceral gaming experiences I've ever had and ever will have. Thumper is the kind of game that just sucks you in, something about its dense atmosphere, the bizarre visuals and the incredibly ominous music that you have to play through - aggressive music, like an obstacle course, each beat something that can kill you, because unlike many other rhythm games, it's the music that's designed around the game, each of its sounds merely a reproduction of the hurdles put before you or the crazy abominations that keep showing up to destroy you.

Even after having finished the insanely difficult Play+ mode, which by the way was one of the most rewarding gaming experiences I've ever had, something about this game just keeps drawing me to it. It's just so unique, its gameplay so intense and gratifying, something so special about learning to control this little beetle and learning to soar through the madness put before it. It's a masterpiece.

Changes YoY: =    My Rating: 9.3 / 10

I've long since lost track of all the Metroidvania games I've played over the years, from the two series that gave the genre its name, to far too many indie games to even count at this point. That effectively spans a period of 30 years at this point, and out of all of them, Hollow Knight stands as the unquestionable peak of the whole genre in my opinion. Not only is the game visually gorgeous, it has some of the tightest, most rewarding gameplay that I've experienced in any 2D Metroidvania. In addition, the setting is wonderfully designed, each location flowing into each other in a way that makes sense and makes the world feel like a place with a past and a culture of its own.

The game also lets the player figure out a lot of the story for themselves, rather than spelling everything out. The characters talk about past events and items you find provide hints at the larger context that everything fits into, but much of it is still left for the player to fit together as they discover new locations and characters that each provide another piece to the puzzle. Very few games have held my interest as effortlessly as Hollow Knight, even through the most challenging sections and battles I never felt the need to stop playing for long. It effectively strikes a perfect balance between challenge and constant sense of discovery. There are so many places to visit and secrets to find behind every corner that it's very easy to fall into the "just one more attempt" flow. The soundtrack is also one of the best of the last decade.

Some more clues. Hopefully they make sense and aren't too wordy.

27 (incorrect guesses - Resident Evil 4, Dino Crisis 3)
- Whilst conservation of ammo was a feature of the first game in the series, in this sequel you’ll have a supply that is pretty much limitless.
- Seeing as this game is a lot more action-orientated and combat heavy than its predecessor, the abundance of ammo makes sense.
- Sees a return to pre-rendered backgrounds, after the previous game had fully 3D environments.
- You switch back and forth between two playable characters as you progress through the game. One of these was the only playable character in the previous game (which was the first game in the series).
- Throughout the game, you can earn points by defeating enemies, which act as a currency to spend on weapons, upgrades, ammo, and health supplies. These points are referred to as ‘Extinction Points’.

24 - Resident Evil 2
- Avoid picking up items early on, and you may come across an additional enemy that will reward you upon defeat.
- This additional enemy is linked to the previous game in the series.
- One of the main locations you visit in this game, is also visited early on in game 23 on my list.
- You need to play through the game twice to fight the final boss and see the proper ending. Once you’ve completed the initial playthrough with one character, you unlock the ability to play through the corresponding scenario with the other playable character.

23 - Resident Evil 3
- In reference to game 24’s first clue - in this game you’ll find out how this enemy came to be.
- The main playable character in this game has a link to the additional enemy referenced in game 24.
- The events of this game take place both before and after the events of game 24 in my list.
- This game had an explosive ending that brought a definitive end to this chapter in the series’ overall story.

22 (edited some clues for a bit more clarity)
- As you play through this game, it helps to pay attention to what you’ve seen, what you’ve heard, and what you’ve been told, as that knowledge will come in handy later.
- One of the titular characters in this game first appeared in an earlier game (of a different genre) from the same developer.
- The titular character mentioned above can take flight in both games, although his method for doing so is different in each game.
- The method for the character mentioned above taking flight in this particular game involves using a physical feature of his companion, who is also named in the title.

#16: Even though the blue bartender in the cutscene isn't very helpful at first, when the protagonist shows his civilised weapon he's suddenly a bit more open about things.
Hint 2: This elegant weapon however is the wrong color for some reason. In this game it's blue, and it's supposed to be "yours", but in the previous game the weapon was green. At least using it is not clumsy.

I feel like this might be a Star Wars game, with the weapon being a lightsaber. But now... there's a lot of Star Wars games, so I'm going to have to read around and then guess at random if I'm on the right path...

Star Wars Jedi Knight II will be my first shot.

27) So a Dino Crisis game. Maybe 3?

I'm trying to make sense of 24 and 23 but can't figure out the series

DC3, RE2 and RE3.

(Man, I should have placed RE2 a bit higher in mine)

That's exactly right, so very good.

I admit you'll have to know the game pretty well to get it from the hints. The first hint refers to a part in a cutscene when Kyle Katarn's asking a 'Chiss' bartender (you know, one of those blue guys with red eyes) for clues and he ignores Katarn until he slams his lightsaber hilt on the counter. The second hint refers to how after the game's intro Kyle returns to Luke's Jedi Academy to get 'his' Lightsaber, which in this game is blue, however in the first Jedi Knight, Kyle's Lightsaber, which he gets from his father is green.

Incorrect, but very close.

RE2 and RE3 are correct - the additional enemy in RE2 being the zombie version of Brad Vickers, who we see get killed by Nemesis in RE3.

DC3 is incorrect, but very close.
