Anyone want to take a stab at #44?

Maybe a visual hint will help:

The Witcher? Probably 3.

Not The Witcher, but good guess!

I think it's Shadow of the Colossus, but I hope I'm wrong, 'cos 44 is very low!

Shadow of the Colossus is correct! There's another Team Ico game in my top 25, so hopefully that makes up for it :)

Change YoY: NEW!   My Rating: 9.1 /10

Control is something of an out-of-nowhere favourite of mine, as I must confess that I was never massively interested in most of Remedy Entertainment's previous games. I've played several of them, but neither Max Payne nor Alan Wake ever stayed with me to the extent that they clearly have with many other people. Even with Control, I didn't actually play it until earlier this year, and still only because it was offered as one of the free monthly titles on PS Plus. I was just expecting to get a decent enough game that I'd enjoy while playing and the forget soon after. I was somewhat mistaken on that.

Not only is Control the most fun game to simply play that Remedy has ever made, it also features one of my favourite settings in all of video games to date. The Oldest House is wonderfully cryptic and strange place, and the wider world it begins to reveal during the story as well as the various side quests and optional collectibles. I also found the characters far more well-rounded than in previous Remedy games, Jesse Faden being a great main character driven by an excellent performance by Courtney Hope. The rest of the cast is great too, a particular highlight being Ahti the janitor. Finally, I'd be remiss not to mention the Ashtray Maze, one of the single best levels in any video game in recent memory. Combined with the track "Take Control", it's a genuine highlight in an already excellent game.

Ashtray Maze is so fucking amazing, that sequence is a big wow from start to finish.  I also enjoyed Control quite a lot, never got tired of flinging pieces of furniture or walls at enemies.

Interesting that you prefer Ico though - why's that?

I really love the puzzle-solving piece, and the Ico-Yorda symbiotic gameplay.

It's crazy that after eight years (oh god, it's been eight years?!) and two sequels, the original Splatoon is still the one with the most stable online play and most precise gyro controls. I remember booting this up in preparation for Splatoon 3 and just being mind-blown at how smooth the experience was, playing it on the Gamepad feels perfect, wait times are minimal, and opposing players even get hit when you hit them with your shots! This game was so awesome and unique, it feels kinda nostalgic now, it really was the defining title of the Wii U.

I hope that whatever comes next from the series can have online play and controls as good as this one did.

No new clues for 39, but reposting because I figure someone will get it...

39 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
- A launch title for the first system it released on, it was sometimes criticised for having dark visuals that made it difficult to play on original hardware (subsequent hardware revisions remedied this issue). This is supposedly the reason the next game had brighter graphics.
- There are four unlockable modes, each of which give your character a boost on one specific attribute at the expense of others - magic, strength, subweapons, and luck.
- In some regions, this game shared the same name as the very first game in this series (other regions added a subtitle). Funnily enough, that first game was later released on the same system, as one of a number of classic games that were reissued.
- The most recent re-release of this game was on multiple platforms, as part of a collection with three other games from the same series.
- Your character carries one of the series’ most iconic weapons as he aims to vanquish a familiar vampiric foe.

36 - Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
- A crowdfunded title that had a spin off game put out a year before it itself had been released.

35
- Best have a pen and paper handy, as unlike the series that heavily influenced this game, any info you come across won’t be recorded anywhere.

34
- You’ll start this game in the same environment that the previous game ended in, although one of the playable characters is different.

Correctumondo. I struggled to come up with a clue for this for some reason, and when I finally did, it got answered within 20 minutes!

Anyway, great game that is I'm overdue to replay. Hopefully some time next year (time permitting).

Already time for more hints!

35) 31 but blue

34) The first and second 3D debut of this series

33) A critical darling, but the next time these companies collaborated the result was a critical disaster

32) Reverse Kirby

31) 35 but yellow

Total War: Rome II

unguessed

An underrated game if you asked me, especially within the wider Total War franchise. Rome II is a great sequel that brought a whole lot of good to the gameplay of the series, some of which was however cut again later. The campaign map for example is top notch. It feels enormous and the cities are unique.

When I first got the game, an amazing looking special edition, my PC was still sporting a GeForce 9500. Great for some ten year old games I played but when I first started Rome II, the intro cutscene which featured some smoke effects turned out to be a slideshow. Time to get some upgrades.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Guessed by drbunnig

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a legendary game, as the name implies. It has rightfully earned its place within the gaming pantheon, but it is also legendary to me. It wasn't my first game, but it probably was the game that lead me on the path all the way here today. It made me a Nintendo fan, a Zelda fan, and a gamer.

I have said this many times before, but the intro to this is etched into my mind. When my aunt showed it for the first time back then, I couldn't believe what I saw. It took a long while before I finally beat it, but luckily the rest of the game was just as good.

Empire: Total War

Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser

A bit of a unique game in the series, Empire: Total War covers the whole world, and is focussed on gunpowder, artillery and large ship battles instead of swords and spears and a more focussed regional map. This is good though, and it obviously fits the theme.

As a Dutchman it is particularly interesting to be able to play my own country. Or at least my country's Republican predecessor. Playing as it, it's easy to become extremely wealthy and thereby very powerful due to the fact that you start with a region or trading post in every theatre, and you have access to a very good, unique trading unit. Surely just like real life!

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds

unguessed

While Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is not much more than a sprite swap of the famous Age of Empires II, it is actually one of my most played games of all times. Is it because it is good? It is as good as Age of Empires can be because it is exactly the same, which certainly is good, but that's not really it.

It is because of convenience. It is one of the only games I'd play competitively with a friend, because one day we started playing it, and then just continued to do so for about a billion years. Its gameplay is simple, Star Wars is cool and games can be quick. Also, our skill is decently close.

Metroid Fusion

Guessed by Veknoid_Outcast

One of the games I missed when it was new. Metroid Fusion came out when I had mostly turned my back on dedicated video game systems and I wasn't really in the mood to try anything new. Though I knew of Metroid, it wasn't a series that was on my radar at this point, nor did I really need or want it to be.

That changed after it became available on 3DS when Nintendo ported a bunch of games to it as a thank you to those that bought the system before the infamous price-cut. At that point I was very much into dedicated video game systems again. It is funny, or not, that today there is a bit of a parallel going on, now I'm also getting turned off from gaming a bit. Maybe in ten years I'll again find out what I missed.

The list so far.
