I'm the first person to vote for Yoshi's Island!?

As much as I love Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island still takes it for its style, creativity, level design and incredible boss battles. Definitely my game of 1995 and one of my favorites of all time.

It do be Chrono Trigger. Never have I been so sure of something.

Oops, replied twice.

I'm glad to see everyone coming together for Chrono Trigger. Good shout for the best game of all time and easily my choice for GotY 1995!

This year also housed some other games I'm fond of though, including Ristar and Comix Zone on the Mega Drive. These games are often overlooked due to the fact that the Mega Drive was in steep decline by 95, but I think they're excellent games that still hold up and are unique to this day

The Saturn and the PlayStation both got off to slow starts imo, but Panzer Dragoon and Suikoden both deserve shoutouts. Both series with greater sequels in the coming years but both of the first entries are still good in their own rights

OK, this is another really difficult year. I love Descent. As you said, the progenitor game of the 6 Degrees of Freedom genre and a great game in itself.

But I also love Star Wars: Dark Forces, which is probably my most beloved FPS of all time. Another LucasArts game, which were really gaming masters back in the day.

When we have games you forgot to list. Like Jagged Alliance. There was a third entry this year by the way. But I still love the original. It is turn-based strategy, but each mercenary has gotten a strong personality... very strong. Some dislike each other so much, they might shoot at each other instead of the enemy. So you should really read the file on each hire.

And finally we have the first entry in the Worms series. Again this is like Scorched Earth, but adds some quirky character in form of the worms.

Really hard choice, I love all four games. I go with Jagged Alliance here, because it is an outrage you didn't even list it.

I've actually never even heard of the Jagged Alliance series.  I don't think it was ever big in North America.  I just looked and saw these games were on gog.com though, so I'll have to check it out sometime.

Knowing your tastes, I thought you'd vote for either Descent or Full Throttle this year.

I never actually played Full Throttle, it is in my backlog. And if you look in my TOP 50 you see that Star Wars and Jagged Alliance rank higher than Descent, although Descent also charted. Worms missed my TOP 50, it is currently at 79. So yeah, all four games are really high in my books and it was a difficult choice, but I gave it to Jagged Alliance, because you missed it in your listings.

10 years greatest game event!

Chrono Trigger is great. The story is captivating, the music is legendary and the multiple endings was groundbreaking. But for some reason, I only ever wish to return for the music. Only finished it once on emulator and played it but did not finish the DS version. The frog theme and memories of a rusty robot still make me tear up a little. A worthy GotY but not my pick.

Full throttle is high on comedy as the other scrumm adventure games, but I think it pales in comparison to many other games in the genre.

I never liked Yoshi's Island. I looks great, but the gameplay was never captivating for me. And I know it is probably overstated but the annoying Mario screams is not cute or engaging and makes me want to play without sound or not at all which is a shame since the music is good.

Warcraft 2 got my vote this time. It was not the first RTS and it is not the best, but it is the first time the genre was great. Charm and variety won me over. Still play it from time to time today. Might be a bit of a cheat since it was not until the Battle.net edition that the game really started to shine. But it is the game I want to return to the most from the year and as such it gets my vote.

My fondest memories go to Frontier: First Encounters, which is what Elite 3 is called.
But, although I tend not to vote for anything that is incremental sequel, I have to give my vote this time to Warcraft II.
Honorable mentions to Dark Forces, Heroes of Might and Magic and Jagged Alliance. Also lot of great adventure games from that year, both classic P&C adventures and puzzle solving adventures.

These threads made me realize how niche strategy games always were, and how popular jrpgs are/were. Of course strategy games never really caught on on consoles, just not suited to a controller. I've never been a big fan of JRPGs, did enjoy some of the Final Fantasy games, couldn't get into Xenogears, Persona, Dragon Quest. Only Ni No Kuni clicked thanks to Ghibli being involved.

I missed Jagged Alliance at the time, loos like a great game!
