Absolutely thrilled to see Paper Mario coming back in good shape, and thrilled to see more of Super Mario RPG.
Also thought Princess Peach Showtime looked surprisingly good.

Nothing really got me in the Direct. Switch 2 is definitely coming. This is a calm before a storm. Metroid remasters or rereleases next year will mark an unofficial countdown to Metroid Prime 4/Switch 2’s release.
Last edited by super_etecoon - on 14 September 2023That was maybe the weakest direct that has happened during the Switch's life but my expectations were on the low side due to Nintendo preparing for the Switch 2 so I'm not outright disappointed. A couple things excited me at least.
That F-Zero troll move though.
Thousand Year Door is nice, but a little light for a closer.
Peach game looks better than I expected but the name is kinda weird.

2024 OpenCritic Prediction Leagues:
No huge game announced for 2024, but a lot of solid content that includes quite a few remasters/remakes. This backs up the rumor that Switch 2 is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong looked familiar within seconds and it's indeed an updated version of the GBA game which was the best Mario vs. Donkey Kong title. F-Zero has been turned into a Battle Royal game which is a neat idea for NSO subscribers; I don't and won't pay for online, so not for me. Another Code gets a second chance as a collection; thankfully, because the first game on the DS clocked in at only ~5 hours; the second game is a lot longer.
Seeing the book with the star at the end made me happy. I instantly knew what it was. The classic Paper Mario RPG formula deserves a chance to sell on a popular console, so the people who argue against a return of the RPG gameplay based on sales will hopefully shut up. A release at the tailend of Switch's lifecycle as Nintendo's main console isn't favorable, but since the release schedule for 2024 is filled tightly, it's not like interest in Switch software will evaporate by fall.
Overall a good Direct. Nintendo showed that they'll be properly committed to Switch as it should be.
No footage of Metroid Prime 4 doesn't concern me. Given its development history, I always expected that they'll only show it once it's almost completed, so merely a few months before its release.
Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.
As an F-Zero and Donkey Kong fan, yup, extremely disappointed but as a Mario RPG fan, HELL YES!!!!! Thousand Year Door and Super Mario RPG back to back hype!
I love Luigi's Mansion in general as well, so I'll definitely pick up the remaster of Dark Moon, although Nintendo dropped that title(?) I'd say a 6.5/10 overall Direct though.
That was a little underwhelming.
Splatoon Expansion looks cool. Looks to be a Roguelike which is a nice twist for the franchise.
Princess Peach game looks really cool. Oozing charm. Maybe not in the target audience but we'll see.
Wario Ware Smooth Moves was my favorite of the Wario Ware games so very happy to see this one will be using that format. I have always been a waggle fan, and think Nintendo should do more with that feature.
F-Zero 99 is fine. Won't play it though probably. I'm just not invested in playing a game I know will be gone in a while. Hopefully Nintendo will take all of those 99 things they made, put em in a collection, and make them permanent.
Unicorn Commander seems interesting? Seems more like an old school Fire Emblem, and there's a place for that.
For those of you who didn't play Wargroove, it was awesome. If you're an Advance Wars fan, you should play it. Honestly better than Reboot Camp. So, look out for the sequel.
Mario Kart DLC announcement was meh. Was maybe hoping for something bigger for the last wave.
Then... there were remakes. My god were there remakes. Another Code is a game I always was curious about, so I may pick that one up. Mario vs DK is one that just doesn't seem like it needed a remake. I'll probably pass on Luigi's Mansion 2. Love the game, but I actually think it works really well on the small 3D screen. Super Mario RPG definitely warrants the remake treatment, and nice they'll be adding at least a little something. Neat that the triple attacks will encourage you to play around with different teams. Would be cool if you could take Mario out of the party this time.
TTYD Remake is something I would have been excited for... But the timing is off. They just announced a remake of a beloved RPG game with Mario so it's harder to get excited with this one. What really made me excited about the Mario RPG announcement was the potential for a sequel. And this... confused me. With the Mario and Luigi series seemingly dead for a while, they can release a different classical style Mario RPG game. Looked like they would be bringing back Mario RPG... but now maybe they'll do Paper Mario? Or continue both? Either way, feels like they maybe should have spaced these games out.
This definitely feels like a system that's kind of on its way out. But at least it looks like a smoother transition than in the past. There will be at least a game a month or so to keep people interested, even if a lot of them are remakes. But, definitely feels like they're holding back.
A ton of remakes, but I really don't mind. Thousand Year Door is great news and looks beautiful. The first Mario vs Donkey Kong is something I'm excited for. The Peach game looks really good and follows from SMB3's play theme. I'm interested in the Tomb Raider remakes and I'm interested din seeing how the graphical upgrades compare to Anniversary. With Mario Wonder and the Arkham Trilogy I've got enough coming for the Switch.

It's feeling more and more like end-of-life Directs tbh. Sucks but it makes sense.
I am all over that Tomb Raider collection. I've been wanting that for years (well, with Last Revelation and Chronicles as well). I have the expansion disc for TR3 on PC but can never get it to work, so that'll be a new experience for me.
Paper Mario TTYD will be awesome too. Was thinking of starting a new playthrough on the Cube, but might just wait for this now.
