Gaming has never been bigger as it is now and there's plenty of games coming and currently in development, enough for chatter of all types of genres and platforms.

I think the popularity of forums has dwindled due to the changes of the last several years thanks to social media changing (Discord, Instagram, X/Twitter, Reddit, etc).

A lot of people moved on for different reasons. Its been like what....10+ years since the forum was super active. A lot has changed in the last 10 years, even for me - graduated from school, married, had a child, bought a house, etc. I'm sure its if not the same, similar experiences for others.

Only reason why I go on ResetERA is mainly for announcements and stuff for gaming, anime, movies, tech.

This. Discord/Reddit/Twitter has fucked forums.

The majority of people on forums like VGChartz/ResetEra/NeoGaf are those who have been on those forums already for years, ResetEra is lucky in that it was an off-shoot from the biggest gaming forum on the internet, Lol. If you tried to make an entirely brand new forum website nowadays with no connection to ResetEra, it would probably fail. People have changed, moved on with their lives, as you said, but a lack of new users are coming in and the console wars are over. Younger generation is all about TikTok/Discord, Reddit, Lol.

VGChartz is still primarily a videogame forum, as is ResetEra. But ResetEra will always be more well known and then I ask, if someone has a choice between ResetEra or VGChartz, why would they pick VGChartz if gaming is what you care most about? ResetEra is way more active, they post news way quicker than us, they even have news that originate from themselves and their insiders, Lol, ResetEra also looks nicer both desktop and mobile and works better. The main reasons I can think of as to why someone would pick VGChartz over ResetEra (or Reddit/Discord) is because you actually prefer a much smaller community and it's easier to sign up to.

On top of that, this site used to at least have a selling point to make it different than Gaf/Era in its hardware/software charts.

As sales data has gotten more secretive and many companies now reporting things like revenue & engagement rather than unit sales, this sites unique features over other forums have diminished.

I always thought it was ironic that people who feed trolls complain about the trolls. Trolls don't exist without food.

Edit

Also, lol @ Ryyu' post.  The mod team is either delusional or just unwilling to accept their biases.

I thought Neogaf closed years ago. We used to lose members to them all the time..until we didn't anymore. It was a huge thread here about it closing. Surprised to hear it is back. Never heard of the other one and even Neogaf had a terrible format back in the day, not enjoyable at all, just had more members.

Edit: oh wow, it is actually up and running and active now, not like before, but definitely active.

I don’t think Neogaf ever shut down, it just had a ton of people leave and join Resetera.

Not sure, never heard of resetera or if I have, it never mattered to me enough to look up. I just know we had a huge influx of people at some point and everyone was saying Neogaf was dead many years ago. After we had a huge battle with them for years. Never looked back afterwards to see what had become of them.

Reddit also had a huge exodus about a year or so ago when they changed up their site, surprised nobody came here from that.

It never closed, just the population went down after everyone found out the owner was in a scandal.

ResetERA the spinoff site was made in 2018 right after majority of the site left.

I'm not sure if Reddit's was much of a exodus , but I only go there to search up specific topics lol

But ya ResetERA has been around for 6 years now.

Originally NeoGAF was more centrist in terms of there being two groups cancelling each other during conversations and the mod team was neutral most of the time.

Then when the scandal occurred and ResetERA was made - all the left leaning people to ResetERA and all the right leaning people stayed on GAF (of course people from both sides kept going back and forth between the two at times).

Anyways, the original owner (and founder) of ResetERA sold the site to some large swedish social media forum group a couple of years ago for like a million or so dollars and he isnt part of the site anymore.

I think one of the problems forums are facing is probably that people themselves have changed. Everything moves at a faster pace, things don't stay around for long, and that's what people seem to like and expect as well. And it's probably not just younger people, many of us 'older' people have probably also come to expect that. I think that's also somewhat related to persistence, which is something I also often see on forums: long-living threads revolving around certain subjects, but I certainly wouldn't expect to see that on most social media platforms. I guess things such as subreddits and Discord channels are reminiscent of persistent threads, but at the same time, they feel very different.

Curiously there are still some fairly active forums however. I personally use a relatively new (est. 2016) Finnish forum (I'm Finnish), and I find it quite active still. But even that's a special case: It was spawned off of its creators' previous site/forum, which... ran into an unfortunate fate, and the userbase largely followed the creators to the new site/forum. But still, the audience is there, if you can somehow grab it. I don't don't know how. Maybe you'd need a strong incentive of some sort, but that's usually easier said than done.

Ryuu mentioned coding work. I'm capable myself, but I deal with enough technical debt that I don't want any more of that if I can avoid it, and as much as I like the community here, I'm very hesitant to throw in free work for a site owner that doesn't seem to care at all about the site (especially when free time isn't something I have an abundance of). I mean, I'm thankful for the site at least existing, but other than that, not great. I think I've also seen someone else mention software development work relatively recently, but I couldn't tell you who or where exactly even if I wanted to (my memory just isn't that great). But at least there should be some technically capable people here still!

I vote to have my old username back

That could be arranged :P

Regarding the site, a number of factors for sure...

  • As some mentioned — the time period. This isn't 2006/7 anymore. The forum structure just doesn't punch the way it once did.

  • How we distribute sales these days may have turned some folks off (though that was inevitable, VGC gets less credit than it should for even attempting what it did).

  • When the consoles were closer in numbers was the strongest point for VGC. And that makes sense. These days, Nintendo and Sony are runaway success stories. It's, for all intents and purposes, boring to many people.

Of course, people have suggested a full overhaul to the anatomy of the site, but that's much easier said than done. But there are still plenty of folks around here, so as long as that is the case, there will always be activity!

Hello. Will you please unlock the thread on the UK riots, it needs a place to be spoken about or can I start a UK and EU politics thread? The argument was between two people who brought their fight over from the US politics thread. No fault of the thread at all. Can it be unlocked or can I start a politics form that isn't devoted to the US?

the dicks didn't help

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

If your talking about the hacker, yeah, I'm sure that put many off,  nobody wants to be involved with all of that.

As for a total overhaul, we have done that over and over throughout the years. Game database went to gamewise, database came back and game wise closed. Vgchartz is just what it is, a sales website. I am sure as long as ioi is making money he is happy.

Overhauls just cause more confusion, people upset, the very people who have been paying the bills all these years. You all. Each click, video watches, game info added, thread added, article, etc gave this site money to keep it open.

Didn't ioi sell the site years ago actually?
