I think you should maybe approach games differently. IMO, expecting a good compelling story from a video game is like setting yourself to be let down.

Even in movies these days. Stories are just garbage, and just over the top stupid.  They don't make movies like titanic, God father, shawshank redemption, and seven anymore.

lol

Gaming luls are a thing and it is fine to live through them. However long it takes, it doesn't matter until you get that envy back or a peculiar gives you the nice eye. The pandemic made me feel that way for 3 months were I could've played basically anything I wanted but I didn't because there were other things I cared too much about at the time.

Anywoo, I think diversification of genres played helps tremendously as well.
You said you're more open to good story games ?
Good lord ! You've got a pletra of ADV(Visual Novel), puzzle-Adventure games with them having amongst the best written stories of the media ...

Basically, go play the Nonary games (999, Virtue's Last Reward, Zero Time Dilemma) collection.

Otherwise, you'd benefit from sweet but " simpler" experiences too. Donut County could be in your alley since it has a raccoon in it, I presume 😏

Sorry but the raccoon spot in my heart is already taken.

I appreciate those suggestions, but I don't think I'm much interested in any of them and they've led me to a more simple realization: that maybe what I've lost interest in, is Japanese games as a whole.

But for the moment I'm really not gonna go through with any suggestions, I can't get into games atm and I'm very much into other things that are taking up my time. Like there was a period of maybe 6 months or so where I really wasn't interested in anything and wasn't doing anything particularly meaningful with my free time, but that's been changing. Obviously since May because that's when my brain got taken over by a raccoon (again), but since then, I've branched out into trying to develop other forms of artistic expression (writing) and then that also led me back to working on my music again (it'd been dormant for a year).

I think I'm fine with just trying to force myself through to the end of TotK whenever I feel like it, and then just replaying games I enjoy until Silksong comes along. I believe in that one.

And this is totally fine. Getting ways to feel like you're actualizing yourself through these manners can be perceived as a positive change and I hope it continues 👍

P.S. Silksong release is just a myth

I don't want your game recommendations unfortunately. I've had a hard time caring about gaming in general lately and haven't finished a single playthrough this year except for replays. I couldn't even get into Zelda for crying out loud! Is this normal? Guess I'm getting old

Dont feel too bad, I'm in the same boat.
Been playing FFXIV for the most part (a mmo), and thats about it, been watching more tv series than normal instead :P
That said, I'm looking forwards to BG3 release, and that will probably be when I pick up a new game again.

You shouldn't be playing games to just be playing them, or trying to finish them.
Like if the intrest isnt there currently for anything, no harm just putting the controller / keyboard down for abit.

Hey mZuzek, I gotta say I do remember you but learning that you love Guardians of the Galaxy is honestly blowing my mind right now. I'm honestly shocked I couldn't read the signs. I guess it goes to show you can never really know someone.

Also I feel like going through gaming lulls is pretty normal. Between playing FFXIV and OW2, I feel like I haven't put that much effort into beating other games I own, but I just kinda go with the flow instead of forcing it. The spark comes back eventually.
