Forums - Sony - PlayStation Nation |OT| Playing Astro Bot on the Horizon Until Dawn

It feels inevitable for Sony to come out with their own PC launcher.

I don't think it means they will stop with releases on Steam/Epic, or they move up on Day and Date launches, but it creates incentives to purchase on the PlayStation platform.

If they add crossbuy to PC and the games one bought on PS5 are available for them on PC 2 years down the road for free, I see it as a big incentive to buy games on PS5 and replaying games as well.

Sadly this is digital only if it ever happens, but at least I would personally benefit from the indies, if I buy them on PS5 I don't need to rebuy them on PC, might even make me consider a Steamdeck down the road to have alongside the Playstation.

So like, if you buy the PS Studios game directly from a PS Store on PC or console for say $80, you get both the PS5 and PC version. All future PS Studio's games will launch at the same time cross platform where PS Store is available.

For those who want to buy from a non PS store, you have to wait maybe 6 to 12 months to be able to purchase the game, which at that time will be a cheaper price at those other online stores.

Come next gen, if you purchase a PS6 game from a PS Store, you get the PS6, PS5, and PC version.

Side note, kind of. If next gen XB is basically a PC, this approach from SNY would make a lot of sense. Try and convince XB gamers to use the PS launcher and purchase from the PS Store.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

I doubt Sony is wasting their time with their own launcher.

It's DOA no matter how you try to sell it.

How so? If a PlayStation store opens which allows consumers to exclusively access PS5/PS6 digital library on PC through this launcher, then that seems like a recipe for a ton of success. Especially if Sony were to start to sell their first-party titles exclusively through their launcher (once it’s big enough).

Also, I’m getting a little more used to the VR in Astro’s Rescue Mission. It’s a very unique experience, never played anything like it! Literally being immersed in a 3D platformer world is kinda surreal… unfortunate I have to take a 15-20min break once every hour or so.

Edit— I’m giving you all an update on my Astro experience: What a shame that this game got virtually zero recognition when it launched. This is a very delightful experience! I’m not sure I’s say it’s better than Astro Bot (2024), but the VR novelty really makes for an extremely immersive experience. Also, 4hr straight in a single VR session (i.e. with no breaks) and no signs of motion sickness.

This game should’ve been marketed more aggressively; this game arguably demonstrates how VR is truly revolutionary and necessary medium for video games.

And it was developed in just 18 months by a tiny team of 25 developers. I think it actually sold quite well for a VR title. It frequently charted in the top 10 PSVR titles.

I have a PSVR2 and tried GT7 (with a racing wheel) and RE8 on it. It was a phenomenal experience but I didn't have the patience to adapt to it and cure my motion sickness, nausea, and other perception weirdness... so it's been collecting dust since 2023. I plan to try it again the future. Sucks that Rescue Mission wasn't patched for PSVR2.

Alright… last update. I got through 210 bots today. All I have left is the final final boss (assuming there’s no one after that green guy) and the challenge version of his level (I assume).

In all? I’d say Astro’s Rescue Mission is not just one of the greatest platformers I’ve ever played, it is among the greatest games I’ve ever played easily. Not only is it visual eye-candy, and not only does it accomplish in VR what Mario did in 3D, but it does so with flying colors. I am blown away! Much more impressed than I was with Astro Bot (2024), which felt like a lesser version of 3D Mario. Rescue Mission is innovative, it can actually be quite challenging at times, and it bustling with idea after idea.

I am stunned this only has an 89MC. This deserves so much more acclaim than it gets.

89 was Opencritic, it got 90 on Metacritic.

Those scores are really high, not as high as Astro Bot, sure, but still really high.

Some MMO sites are speculating that NCSoft could reveal the rumored Horizon project in a Korean convention that will start this thursday. It's a speculation more than a rumor so there's no point in thinking too much about it when the date is so close.
I'm not playing any MMO right now so I don't hate the possibility but If this is true I wonder how far off the Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer is lol. I'm expecting to see the reveal of that game next year.

(edit to insert the picture that describes their secret announcement).

Sony won't sell their content only through this launcher. That is a disaster waiting to happen mostly because there's not nearly enough first party content to make this viable from a maintainence or consumer perspective.

The biggest issue here is who the audience for this hypothetical launcher is? And I doubt there is a large enough audience on PC with high-end PC (which I asusme is not that high to begin with) who will want another launcher just for Sony games. I'm not convinced.

Epic had to be incredibly agreesive to get a foot into the PC launcher space. There's no way Sony is going to follow that playbook, which makes the decreases the value proposition imho.
