PS5 vs Switch Sales Comparison - December 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. Switch Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 2,223,132 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,578,949 - Switch

Total Lead: 3,093,744 - NS

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 30,467,671

Switch Total Sales: 33,561,415

December 2022 is the 26th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Switch by 2.22 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PS5 by 3.58 million units. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 3.09 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 30.47 million units in 26 months, while the Nintendo Switch sold 33.56 million units. Month 26 for the PlayStation 5 is December 2022 and for the Nintendo Switch it is April 2019.

The Nintendo Switch crossed 40 million in month 33, 50 million in month 35, and 60 million in month 41. The Nintendo Switch has sold 120.74 million units through December 2022.

It's 4 more months till DS finished it's last big holiday, it sold 2.3m in Sep&Oct, and 8m in Nov&Dec... Switch should manage ~4m during that time (down from 5.4m last year) so the gap will increase to around 16m IMO

After that DS has reasonable sales first 3 months of 2011 (almost 3m) so the gap will be essentially flat... then 3DS launched so sales continue to drop, so Switch will start to catch up but it will be very slow. It will catch up more significantly in Nov/Dec 2023 though assuming no successor launches... My guess is end of Dec  this year gap will be about 10 million.

Looking it over it will be a tad further away from 20m than I thought. Very impressive that the gap will never get that big.

December 2022 is the 70th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Switch has caught up with the Wii when you align the launches by 1.33 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 2.39 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 0.09 million units. This is the first time the Switch has been ahead of the Wii since month 12.

The 70th month for the Nintendo Switch is December 2022 and for the Wii it is August 2012. The Switch has sold 39.65 million units, while the Wii sold 39.56 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 72.

The Wii sold 41.70 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 2.05 million units to outsell the Wii.

I think the gap will be around 16-17mil.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 1.06 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 11.68 million units.

The 70th month for the Nintendo Switch is December 2022 and for the Xbox 360 it is August 2011. The Switch has sold 39.65 million units, while the Xbox 360 sold 27.97 million units during the same timeframe. The Xbox 360 sold current Switch sales in month 87.

The Xbox 360 sold 43.75 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 4.10 million units to outsell the Xbox 360.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Wii Europe:

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,148,673 - Switch

Total Lead: 750,382 - Wii

Switch Total Sales: 30,752,303

Wii Total Sales: 31,502,685

December 2022 is the 70th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch caught up to the Wii by 1.10 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 2.15 million units. The Wii is currently ahead of the Switch by 0.75 million units.

The 70th month for the Nintendo Switch is December 2022 and for the Wii it is September 2012. The Switch has sold 30.75 million units, while the Wii sold 31.50 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 63.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 2.37 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.
