The big question with XBS vs 360 is how long the former will hang in there; the 360 had an abnormally long shelf life and legs.
I expect this generation to also be a long one, so it'll be an interesting race to watch.

Switch keeping up a good fight and has, so far, the best longevity for a Nintendo console in recent times. It now all goes down as if Nintendo releases a successor soon, a revision or do nothing at all for the next year or two.

If they release a revision, i think it can power it through new highs and surpass the DS/PS2.
If it's a successor soon, then sales will fumble like the DS did in later years.
If they do nothing at all, i feel like sales will start to drop now. People are starting to feel like the Switch has given it's time and that narrative is always a good indicator that it is time for something else. I would say people are anticipating it to go out sooner rather than later now.

With Tears of the Kingdom and more Mario Kart DLC coming out in 2023, I don't see a successor coming out until March 2024 at the earliest, which is 7 years after the release of the Switch. I've been predicting a March 2024 to March 2025 release for the successor. I can see Nintendo releasing one final revision of the Switch for Holiday 2023.

Switch has shown incredible legs, but even the most successful systems slow down eventually, and the Switch is about to turn 6 years old, so it's no surprise it's gradually slowing from a full on sprint to a jog.

I feel like 2023 would be the right time for a successor; this year or sooner would have been premature and a stupid move to cut short such a wildly successful system, but if they wait too long they could risk losing momentum and fumbling the transition.

A 2023 successor with crossgen support for the Switch through 2024 would be the best move in my opinion.

Nintendo is about to show us their 2023 plans. It’s already going to be a stout year with Zelda and Pikmin as well as a host of third party arrivals. I’m guessing Nintendo has more than a few surprises up their sleeves and I also think many of these announcements will buoy our feelings about the coming year.

But there is no denying that we need the future soon, even a hint of it. I don’t think we’ll get that hint until early 2024, although all publications and channels this coming year will be devoted to next-gen buzz. Of course, the same could be said since 2020 and arguably the entire lifespan of the Switch with everyone asking for a “Pro” model.

Nintendo is on a knife edge this year. Even the staunchest of Nintendo allies is getting restless, and understandably so since gamers are used to a certain rhythm of hardware releases. I hope they are prepared to wow in some way when they do show the Switch successor. The way that I personally hope they wow us is with backwards compatibility with the Switch with all our software transferring to the newer system. This more than anything will establish trust with this new install base and from there it’s just about games, games, games. No gimmicks, no left turns, no reinventing the wheel (or the controller).

Yea, i do feel like a Pro is still possible for some reason. I feel like they should just keep updating the Switch model and discontinue the old one, making new games work on the previous console but slowly making exclusives like Sony and MS are doing. Like the new Mario could be released on both Switch and new console at the same time.

I do still feel like it's weird they would release a OLED model with improvements but no boost while they even had a small boost for the New 3DS. ToTK is the last chance for a Pro release, after that we can all pack it up and wait for the successor if it doesn't happen. I guess maybe they scrapped the Pro they sent to developers and will just move on to it being a successor.

I want a wow factor when the next system comes out, not incremental steps. A Pro would certainly make me happy as it would almost guarantee that Switch at least runs elbows with the DS/PS2, but an iPhone model to me would be boring and I think it would fizzle out eventually. The iPhone model works because you have phone plans and replacement plans and people are always upgrading every two years. Don’t want that as a customer, definitely don’t want that as someone who hopes we make less plastic, not more, to dump in our landfills.
