Nintendo is about to show us their 2023 plans. It’s already going to be a stout year with Zelda and Pikmin as well as a host of third party arrivals. I’m guessing Nintendo has more than a few surprises up their sleeves and I also think many of these announcements will buoy our feelings about the coming year.
But there is no denying that we need the future soon, even a hint of it. I don’t think we’ll get that hint until early 2024, although all publications and channels this coming year will be devoted to next-gen buzz. Of course, the same could be said since 2020 and arguably the entire lifespan of the Switch with everyone asking for a “Pro” model.
Nintendo is on a knife edge this year. Even the staunchest of Nintendo allies is getting restless, and understandably so since gamers are used to a certain rhythm of hardware releases. I hope they are prepared to wow in some way when they do show the Switch successor. The way that I personally hope they wow us is with backwards compatibility with the Switch with all our software transferring to the newer system. This more than anything will establish trust with this new install base and from there it’s just about games, games, games. No gimmicks, no left turns, no reinventing the wheel (or the controller).
